TO THE HONOURABLE

THE COURT OF DIRECTORS

EAST INDIA COMPANY.

Honourable Sirs,

We undertook the Work now submitted to the Public from
a persuasion of its utility ; and we send it to the Press encouraged by
the permission to inscribe it to your Honourable Court, our kind and
generous Patrons.

Engaged from early youth in the business of your Home
Establishment, especially in the Military branch of it, we naturally
feel much interest in matters connected with the Indian Army,
and we doubt not that the List which we publish of the Individuals
to whom, under wise councils, Great Britain is mainly indebted for
the vast extension and stability of her Eastern Empire, will be re-
ceived by the Public with much approbation.

This List includes the Periods of Service, the Promotions,
Retirements, or Deaths, whether in India or in Europe, of nearly
Seven Thousand Officepj in your Honourable Company's Army,
from the Year 1760 to the present time : it has been prepared with
minute and untiring research ; and no name is inserted, rank
appended, nor date stated, the accuracy of which is not sanctioned
by Documents of indisputable authority.

viii DEDICATION.

Though we may attach undue importance to our unostentatious
but elaborate Performance, Your Honourable Court will, we trust,
yet deign to accept of this Dedication as a sincere Testimony of
Respect for your Public Character, and of Gratitude for many Act»;
of personal Kindness and Condescension, from

Honourable Sirs,
Your obliged and obedient Servants,

EDWARD DODWELL,
JAMES SAMUEL MILES.

INDIAN ARMY LIST.

BENGAL.

NOTE.

The Editors particularly desire it to be observed that the Names
of Officers in the Bengal Artillery and Engineers, from the year
1760 to 1794, are placed by themselves at the commencement of the
Work : from and after that period, they are brought on in the
same order with the other Branches of the Service.

The Editors beg to intimate that they have prepared the Bengal
Army List up to the year 1794, on the plan of an entire Alphabetical
List ; from that time they have adopted the Alphabetical plan only
as far as the first letter, deeming it in every respect preferable, after
that period, to adhere to the Seasons of Appointment, hy which means
increased facility will be given for tracing and comparing the
relative ranks and periods of service of those who have entered the
army in the same season.

They beg also to advise their Subscribers that, in the following
List, they have invariably adhered, as far as has been practicable,
and except where it is otherwise stated, to the date of Regimental
Rank up to the Rank of Lieut. -Colonel inclusive.

*** Where the Corps is not specially stated against each
Officer's name, after the year 1794, it is to be concluded that such
Officer belongs to the Infantry.
