PREFACE.

This volume completes the publication of the Woburn L
from 1640, the year in which the territory of Woburn was first
31, 1890. Increase Winn, the first native of Woburn, was b
1641, so that the published record of births really covers a peri
dred and fifty years — 1641 to 1890 inclusive.

In the present publication the mother's maiden name has been .
renthesis in all cases where it was given in the clerk's records. In
this book is identical in plan and scope with its predecessor.

In the compilation of the births from 1873 ~ 1890, I have met wi
class of errors that I found in the earlier records. The most serio
errors consist in the misspellings of the surnames which are somet
from correct that it is very difiicult to tell what the right name is. F'oi
Brock is recorded as Byrt, Callahan as Callan, Comeau as Coleman, 1
Welch, Gay as Guye, Hyatt as Wyatt, Kean as Kearns, Keating as a
.A \iey as Luna, Marran as Mahon, McEachan as McCatten, Mulkeen as -.
lern, etc., etc.

In addition to this class of mistakes, there are many errors in Christian n?
nd in dates ; and while a careful comparison of the record of the birth.*'
iven family has enabled me to correct many of the errors in surnames, I
ad no sufficient data, except in a very few cases, to warrant any correction
le record of the dates of births. Were physicians to do their duty and cc j^jly
ith the statute law which requires a return of births to be made by them to the
:;y^ clerk on or before the fifth day of each month, or if parents and householders
jre to give notice to the city clerk within six months from the time a child is
rn in their family, as by law they are required to do, the omissions and inac-
racies of the public record of births would not exist. A violation of these pro-
ions of law constitutes a criminal offence and renders the physician, parent or
seholder, as the case may be, liable to a fine. If a few of this class of c*
iers were summoned into court — a course of action which has recently beei.
.en by the city authorities in Philadelphia — our records would be more re
5le, and some of the confusion and litigation, which now arise in cases where
proof of a birth is essential to the establishment of aright to real or per-
al property, or to the determination of a question of domicile, would be
ided.

or many years it has been customary in Woburn and elsewhere for the town^
ity clerk to employ a canvasser each Spring to take a census of the births by
ing inquiry at each house for the record of children born there the previous
•. The returns thus obtained are duly recorded on the clerk's books, al
igh the canvasser is not an officer recognized by law and his returns there*

lot official. The information thus obtained is valuable and serves

and complete the notices of births filed by physicia;ns and parents. It

more valuable, however, if the person employed as canvasser

non school education, and took proper pains to obtain the full

"i and a correct spelling of those names.

tion and correction of misspelled names I received valuable
census which, in 1890, the school teachers caused to be taken
children then in the public schools. This census gave names
lildren, and dates of birth.

3 and additions to the first volume of births, 1640- 1872, which
jhed me, are inserted in the foot-notes to this volume under the
ch they belong. None of these e7-rata, except a few.unimportant
ones, represent inaccuracies for which the compiler is respon-
.hargeable to the incorjipleteness of the original records. I have
c necessary to state, in each instance, the authority on which these
ut the information has, in all cases, come from reliable sources,
er of births in this volume, exclusive of those given in the foot-
33, The number published in Part I, was 12,755, s° ^^^^ ^^^ total
the two hundred and fifty years (1641 - 1890) is 19,188.
jendix to this volume contains Mr. William R. Cutter's Bibliography
/urn Local History, in the compilation of which he has been engaged for
time. It is designed to show what historical material of all kinds tVre
ctant relating to Woburn, and also includes a description of works written
^oburn people in the XVII. and XVIII. centuries. In it, too, will be founr'
'ailed list or account of manuscripts of local historic value, such as towi
s, parish records, etc., and a reference to plans and illustrations o
jurn localities made prior to 1850, and to many since that date. It is, i
a complete digest of the sources of Woburn history, and a work of preser
and^'future value to our citizens. Its publication this year is peculiarly timely.

The>calendar at the end of this book, ''Giving Every Day of the Week
Woburn History, 1642- 1892," embraces all dates from 1600 to 1900 inclusiv
and may be found convenient for consultation on subjects not connected wi'
local history.
