THE YEARE OF OUR LORDE GOD 1551.

EDITED BY

ROBERT HOVENDEN.

VOL. I.
CHRISTENINGS, 1551 to 1700.

LONDON :

1884.

preface.

The Registers hitlierto printed by the Harleian Society have been — with
the exception of those of Westminster Abbey and Canterbury — con-
fined exclusively to parishes contained within the ancient boundary of
the City of London. The printing of the Registers of St. James,
Clerkenwell, of which the present volume is the first of a series of five,
must therefore be regarded somewhat as a new departure. The Parish of
Clerkenwell, being one of those immediately contiguous to the City
proper, was at the date of the commencement of the Registers a suburban
district differing from the City Parishes, which, although very much
smaller in area, were fully covered with dwellings and fairly populated
with inhabitants, while Clerkenwell was thinly occupied by both dwellings
and people. A comparison between the burials in the City Parish of
St. Peter's, Cornhill, and the suburban Clerkenwell, taking the same
decades in either case, will give some idea of the enormous difference
between the two.

In the ten years, 1661 to 1570, the average number of burials each
year registered at St. Peter's, Cornhill, was 34, and in St. James, Clerken-
well, 57; in each case the period contains the year 1563, a year of great
mortality in both parishes. In the ten years, 1765 to 1774, the burials at
St. Peter's averaged 22 each year, a decrease when compared with 1561 to
1570, accounted for by the exceptional mortality of 1563. Making
allowance for this mortality, the burials at St. Peter's appear to have
remained nearly stationary for a period of over 200 years, while the burials

VI PREPACE.

at St. James for the same decade readied the enormous average of 457
in a year. Nothing could more forcibly illustrate the increase in the
population which took place in Clerkenwell during the period covered by
the Registers here printed, and we are only perplexed how the bodies
represented by these figures were disposed of, considering the limited
area of the burial-ground attached to the church.

The Register Books, from which this and the subsequent volumes
are printed, consist of a series of ten volumes, most of which are in a
good state of preservation.

The first book is of paper, containing Christenings and Burials
from 1561 to 1653, and Marriages from 1587 to 1653 ; the Marriages for
1561 to 1587 are wanting in this book. At the end are the Marriages for
1668 to 1670, which were continued in it from a later book. At the first
glance this paper book was thought to be one of the very rare first
Registers from which the vellum transcripts were ordered to be made, but
a more careful examination disclosed, bound up in the middle of the
volume, four leaves of mixed Christenings, Burials, and Marriages,
headed :

" A trewe note of suche Mariages Christeninges and burialls as
were founde in sundery boockes and papers after the makinge of this
regester boock begyn'inge at the yere of o'' Lorde god 1551 vntill the
yere of o^' Lorde god 1578 as followeth."

These four leaves commence November 12, 1551, and continue, as
stated in the heading, although with serious gaps, till 1578, there being
no entry from June 20, 1552, till June 13, 1560, beside other lesser gaps.

Such of the entries on these four leaves not repeated in the vellum
book next mentioned have been printed in their chronological order at the
beginning of the respective sections. The discovery of these four leaves
permits little doubt that a still more ancient book once existed from
which this and the first vellum book must have been partially compiled.

The earliest vellum book contains the Christenings and Marriages
1560 to 1625, and Burials 1560 to 1616 only, and is that from which the
transcript for printing was commenced, each entry being compared with
the corresponding one in the first paper book, and every variation or

PREFACE. Vii

omission between the two books has been printed in italics between
brackets, the italics representing the reading in the paper book. In
exceptional instances, where entries occur in the vellum copy which do
not appear in the paper one, they are denoted by a footnote. At the
termination of the first vellum book the first paper book had to be
resumed for the purpose of the transcript.

The third book in rotation is of vellum, containing Christenings
1653 to 1673, Burials 1653 to 1670, and Marriages 1653 to 1668, the
continuation of the Marriages to 1670 being in the first paper book
previously described.

The fourth book is of paper, containing Christenings 1673 to 1710,
Burials 1670 to 1710, and Marriages 1670 to 1691.

The fifth book is a small one of paper, containing Marriages only
1690 to 1712.

The sixth book is of paper, containing Christenings, Burials, and
Marriages 1711 to 1725-6.

The seventh book is of paper, containing Christenings, Burials,
and Marriages 1726 to 1741-2.

The eighth book is of paper, containing Christenings only 1742
to 1784.

The ninth book is of paper, containing Burials 1742 to 1770.

The tenth book is of paper, containing Marriages only 1742 to
1754.

The orthography of the names between 1625 and 1685 is very
defective ; hence in searching the Index for particular names care must
' be taken to note possible variations of spelling. "With the exception of
ff being converted into a capital F, the spelling of the originals has been
maintained in each entry irrespective of preceding or subsequent varia-
tions of the same name. All superfluous words have been omitted, and
" son " and " daughter " contracted to " s." and " d."

During the period Charles Ley held the curacy of the parish
the entries commencing February 18, 1718-19, were made thus — omitting
the sex of the child christened — "James of John and Mary Fathers
Baptized." In cases where the Christian name was one common to

Vlll PREFACE.

both sexes, he usually added " son " or " daughter," as the case required.
For the sake of uniformity the letters " s." and " d." have been added to
all these entries, except where a few doubtful names occur to which the
scribe omitted to denote the sex ; these latter are denoted by a — .

In so voluminous a Eegister as this, it is obviously impossible to
direct attention to any special names or other points of interest, but
no volumes printed by the Society will afford a wider scope for the labours
of the genealogist.

I cannot conclude this brief summary of the contents of this and
the succeeding volumes without expressing, in the name of the Harleian
Society, my sincere thanks to the Rev. John Henry Rose, M.A., Vicar of
St, James, Clerkenwell, for the permission to print these interesting
records of his parish, as well as for the facilities he has so kindly placed
at the disposal of myseK and the Society's Transcriber for carrying the
Work through the press, Nor can I fail to express my admiration at
the way in which Mr. Eedes, the Society's Transcriber, has completed
his Herculean task in making so faithful a transcript of the originals.
To the Society's Printers also I am indebted for many suggestions and
exceptionally clean proofs.
