Woodward 1 , aged 45 ; wife Rose, aged 50 ; son George, aged 13 years, and son John, aged
13 years. They settled in Watertown, Mass. Wife Rose d. 1662. aged 80, and he m. 1663,
Ann Gates, b. 1603, wid. of Stephen Gates of Cambridge. He d. 1665. Wid. Ann died in
Stow, 1683. He was one of the earliest proprietors of Watertown.

George Woodward 2 , b. about 1621; d. 1676; res. Watertown; m. (1) Mary, and had
eight children ; m.' (2) 1659, Elizabeth Hammond. His fourth son was

John Woodward 3 , b. 1649 ; his will, dated 1728, proved 1732 ; rem. to Newton, Mass.
He m. Rebecca Robbins, dau. of Richard of Cambridge. She d. 1696. He died 1732, aged
83. He m. "1686, Sarah Bancroft of Reading" — Watertown. "2nd w. Sarah Goodenow" =
Newton, and the death of 2d wf. in each case is Sept. 22, 1723. He was a weaver and
resided on the south side of the river near Newton Upper Falls. The house he erected was
standing in 1854. occupied by his descendants. He had eleven children b. in Cambridge and
Newton. The fifth was

Daniel Woodward*, b. 1681; res. Newton; selectman rliree years; d. 1749, aged 68; m.
1704, Elizabeth Greeley, who had five children, and died 1750. The last was

Daniel Woodward 5 , Jr., b. 1714; d. 1774, aged 60; res. Newton; m. 1739, Mary Stoxe,
who d. 1776. aged 57. They had eight children. The seventh was

Daniel Woodward", b. March 23, 1760-1 ; was a soldier of the Revolution, in the Conti-
nental Army at Saratoga and at the surrender of Burgoyne ; settled in Hubbardston, Mass.,
where he died Sept. 20, 1853, aged 93. He m. there Nov. 28, 1784, Keziah Newton 8 (2084).
They had nine children. The youngest was Daniel 1 , Jr., b. 1802; d. 1847; m. (1) 1829, Mary
Newton 1 , who d. 1838, aged 28; m. (2) 1842, Anna Newton 7 , sister of Mary, daus. of Nathan"
(2124). See, for further information, note to Nahum Newton 4 (4257).

% Eli Clark (not traced), from Barre to Hubbardston, about 1770, d. Dec. 26. 1817, aged
66; m. at Rutland, 1770, Lois Stone, dau. of Nathan and Mary. She d. 1836, aged 84. They
had nine children in Hubbardston. The seventh was

Asa Clark, b. 1789; d. 1872; m. 1815, Lois Simonds. who d. 1858. They had ton chil-
dren. The third was Asa Gardner, b. 1821 ; m. Miriam L. Newton. See the Clark Genealogies.

2125. ASA NEWTON 6 (Timothy 5 , Elisha 4 , Moses 3 , Moses 2 , Richard 1 ), son
of Timothy and Huldah (Wheelock) Newton of Shrewsbury, Westminster and
Hubbardston, Mass., was born in the latter town, January 26, 1779, and died
[I suppose at Nashua, N. H.] January — , 1874.

He married March 15, 1800, Mary, "Polly" Stow, daughter of Ebenezer and
Mary (Hartwell) Stow* of Concord and Hubbardston, Mass. She was born at
Concord, March 25, 1779, and died, probably at Nashua, N. H., March 18, 1855,
aged 76.

Mr. Newton was a farmer in Hubbardston, Mass., where he lived until after
his first eight children were born, when he moved to Dunstable, Mass., and about
1814 removed to Nashua, N. II., where he settled as a farmer, and had four more
children.

R. R., where he was a farmer. Their children were:

south of the Nashua homestead. He married in 1854, Sarah Wheeler,

Dexter E. Robbins, son of Elijah and Rebecca (Corey) Robbins of Dun-

smith and farmer. Two children.

N. R. R., was killed, Jan. 24, 1865, struck by a bridge at Lancaster,
Mass.

2704. 3. Francis Albert 8 Dow, b. Feb. 20, 1854; a farmer on the homestead; m.

in 1880, Emma Gilson, dau. of Joel and Louisa (Woods) Gilson of

Dunstable, Mass., where she was born in 1857. One child.

Daniel and Louisa (Farrar) Smith of Hollis, N. H., where he was bora

Jan. 25, 1817 ; a farmer in Hollis, N. H, in the south part of the town.

some years in the northern part of the town; returned to the home-
stead in 1889. In 1895 had been town clerk since 1885 ; m. in 1875,
Fanny E. Frost, dau. of Reuben and Jane (Peabody) Frost of Arling-
ton, Mass., where she was born in 1850. Three children.

2706. 2. Mary Louisa 8 Smith, b. July 24, 1853; m. in 1874, Samuel R. Merrill,

son of Samuel and Sarah (Newell) Merrill of Nashua, N. H, where

he was born in 1844 ; a marketman and farmer at Pepperell, Mass.

2126. ITHAMAK NEWTON 6 (Timothy 5 , Elisha 4 , Moses 3 , Moses 2 , Richard 1 ),
son of Timothy and Huldah (Wheelock) Newton of Shrewsbury, "Westminster
and Hubbardston, Mass., was born at Hubbardston, October 24, 1781, and died
there July 28, 1838.

He married at Hubbardston, October 15, 1807, Mary, "Polly" Nichols, daugh-
ter of Jonathan and Sarah (Davis) Nichols* of Athens, Vt., and Hubbardston,

where she was born " 22, 1785." She died in "So. Lancaster, Mass., Dec.

12, 1869, aged 85." Mrs. Polly Newton and Luke Warren married at Hubbard-
ston, September 30, 1841.

Ithamar Newton lived in Hubbardston, Mass., where he had a small farm.
His children were born there. In addition to farming he was also a chairmaker
and wall layer.

dau. of Oliver and Mary Davis of Princeton, where she was born Feb. 26, 1753. She d.
May 23, 1822, aged 68. He m. (2) Nov. 27, 1823, Mrs. Rachel Nichols of Westminster. I
suppose she was wid. of David Nichols of Gardner, m. 1788 ; eleven children ; and dau. of
Nathan and Lydia Howard of Westminster, b. 1765. She died "Wid. of David," 1849, aged 84.

Children of Jonathan and Sarah were : Sally, 1780 ; " , dau., Feb. 3, 1784" ; "Polly.

82. He m. (1) Sarah (Lyon) Mathews, who d. 1805. aged 38; three children. He m. (2)
Elizabeth Walker of Westminster, who d. 1838, aged 68 ; one child. He m. (3) 1841, Polly

2129. DANIEL NEWTON 6 (Solomon 5 , Elisha 4 , Moses 3 , Moses 2 , Richard 1 ),
son of Solomon and Hannah (Hastings) Newton of Shrewsbury, Mass., was born
there (according to the town records; in Heath, Mass., according to family
records)j April 13, 1776, and died at Shrewsbury, March 6, 1827, aged 51.

He married at Shrewsbury, January 31, 1803, Lucy Maynard, daughter of
Daniel and Hannah (Harrington) Maynard* of Shrewsbury. She was born
June 2, 1782, and died, probably at Heath, October 2, 1818. P. R.

He married (2) at Shrewsbury, April 17, 1825, Mrs. Dolly (Rice) Haven,
widow of Moses Haven of Shrewsbury, by whom she had six children, and daugh-
ter of Col. Asa Rice and wife Miriam (Wheeler) of Shrewsbury, where she was
born September 17, 1779. No children by this marriage.

Mr. Newton moved from Shrewsbury to Heath, Mass., soon after his marriage.
He owned and operated a sawmill there. After the death of his wife Lucy, he
returned to Shrewsbury with six children ; married again, and died in his native
town.

I have not the town records of Heath, so cannot verify, but we suppose the
children were all born there — at least some of them were.

Thev lived in Northborough and Worcester, where thev had one child born.

Lucy Maynard 7 , b. April 7, 1816, at Sterling, P. R., and died at Worcester,
Mass., April 21, 1896, aged 80 yrs., 14 dys. She married at Shrews-
bury. April 19, 1838, Alfred Holden. son of Josiah Forbes Holden of
Newfane, Vt., and grandson of Captain Josiah Holden, who was a soldier
of the Revolution. He was a brother of Sarah Ann Holden (above),
wife of John M. Newton 7 . Alfred Holden was born at Newfane, Vt., July
8, 1816, and died at Worcester, Mass., March 16, 1898, aged 81 yrs., 8 mos.,
8 dys. He resided first in Shrewsbury, then in West Boylston, later in
Grafton, and from there removed, about 1859, to Worcester, where he
was in business, and where he and his wife died. Children :

13, 1844, aged 8 mos., 2 dys.

This is probably the same family.

Moses Maynard of Sudbury, prob. a grandson of John Maynard 1 and born during the
first decade of the eighteenth century, although I do not find a record of his birth, married
in Sudbury, 1724. Lois Stone of Framingham. They lived in Sudbury and had there nine
children. One was

Samuel Maynard, b. Dec. 20, 1726; d. in Shrewsbury, 1755; m. In Sudbury 1750, Sarah
Noyes. They had three children in Sudbury and removed to Shrewsbury. His wid. m. (2)
1760, Enoch Kingsley of Windsor, Conn. Only son was

Daniel Maynard, b. 1750, "came to Shrewsbury in 1779," where he died in 1834, aged
83, "In a fit." He m. 1776. Hannah Harrington of Worcester, who died 1838, aged 81.
They had ten children. One was Lucy, b. June 2, 1782 ; m. 1803, Daniel Newton ; and the
fourth was Relief, bapt. 1785 ; m. 1806, Philo Slocum of Sutton and Shrewsbury. The sixth
was Daniel, b. 1789 ; m. 1809, Zelinda Allen of Northborough.

2135. SOLOMON NEWTON 6 , JR. (Solomon 5 , Elisha 4 , Moses 3 , Moses 2 , Rich-
ard 1 ), son of Solomon and Lydia (Rice-Hemenway) Newton of Marlborough and
Shrewsbury, Mass., was born at Shrewsbury, August 2, 1783, and died, prob-
ably in Ohio.

He married at Boylston, Mass., December 11, 1804, Patience Hastings, daugh-
ter of Eliakim and Patience (Moore) Hastings* of Shrewsbury and Boylston,
Mass. She was born at Shrewsbury, October 31, 1782, and died, probably in
Ohio. She was admitted to the church at Shrewsbury in 1806.

Mr. Newton's six children were born in Shrewsbury. Sometime afterwards
the family moved to Ohio.

son of Solomon and Lydia (Rice-Hemenway) Newton of Shrewsbury, Mass.; a
twin with his brother Dennis; was born at Shrewsbury, August 14, 1792, and
died .

He married at Shrewsbury, March 24, 1812, Martha, "Patty" Rice, daugh-
ter of Capt. John, Jr., and Elizabeth (Wheelock) Rice:): of Shrewsbury, Mass.,
and Wardsborough, Vt. She was born at Shrewsbury, it is said, although no
record of her birth appears there.

♦Eliakim Hastings 6 (s. of John 4 ), b. Feb. 7, 1763; d. at Boylston, 1811, aged 48; m.
1782, Patience Moore. Their first two children born in Shrewsbury, the others in Boylston,
were : Patience, b. Oct. 31, 1782 ; Eliakim, 1784 ; d. 1803 ; Dolly, 1786 ; Jotham, 1788 ;
Tamar, 1790; Joseph, 1792; Lois, 1794; Luke, 1799; Levi Moore, 1802; Eliakim, 1805;

John Hastings 4 (s. of Daniel 3 and Sarah (Ball)), b. Aug. 27, 1737; m. May 25, 1762, Eliza-
beth Howe of Lancaster. They lived in the North Parish of Shrewsbury. It is said he died in
Boylston ; no record of it. His sister, Hannah Hastings 4 , m. Solomon Newton, Sr. Children
of John 4 were : Eliakim 6 , b. Feb. 7, 1763 ; Elizabeth*, 1765 ; John 6 , 1768 ; Stephen 6 , 1771 ;
Alice 6 , 1776 ; Reuben 6 , 1784.

Jacob Rice 3 (s. of Edward 2 ), b. about 1660; d. 1746, aged 86-8-28. G. S., m. Mary ,

who d. Oct. 6, 1752, aged 80, G. S. ; res. in Marlborough, and also had lands in Brookfield.
Will, 1741, proved 1746. Had nine children. The seventh was

Jacob Rice 4 , b. Oct. 3, 1707 ; d. 1788, in 81st yr. ; res. Westborough and Northborough ;
in. Hannah Howe 4 of Marlborough, who d. 1757, aged 51, dau. of John 3 (b. 1671, d. 1752),
son of John 2 (b. 1640, killed by Indians 1775), son of John 1 and Mary How of Sudbury and
Marlborough. She had eight children. He m. (2) 1767, Hannah Maynard, who d. 1803, aged
84. His fourth child was

John Rice 5 , b. Sept. 22, 1736 ; d. 1800 ; res. Shrewsbury, on farm given him by his father ;
m. 1763, Rebecca Fay. They were adm. to the church at Northborough in 1771. Will proved
1800. Five children. The third was

Capt. John Rice, Jr., b. Oct. 9. 1771 ; m. Nov. 16, 1790, Elizabeth Wheelock, b. 1709.
both of Shrewsbury. After having six children born in Shrewsbury, and Martha", not recorded
there, he moved with his family to Wardsborough. Vt., perhaps died there.

Elizabeth Wheelock, b. Feb. 6, 1769, dau. of Gershom, Jr., and Susannah (Knowlton),
son of Capt. Gershom and Abigail (Flagg), son of Dea. Samuel and Lydia Wheelock of Marl-
borough and Shrewsbury.

Mr. Newton lived in Shrewsbury. Eight children were born to him there.

Administration on the estate of Calvin Newton of Shrewsbury, 1875. No.
43,075 of Probate Court, I suppose to be this Calvin Newton. I have not exam-
ined the papers.

2138. DENNIS NEWTON 6 (Solomon 5 , Elisha*, Moses 3 , Moses 2 , Richard 1 ),
son of Solomon and Lydia (Rice-Hemenway) Newton of Shrewsbury, Mass., was
born there August 14, 1792. He died .

He married [int. in Shrewsbury, Oct. 12, 1820], Sarah H. Hey wood of Worces-
ter.

Mr. Newton resided in Shrewsbury. Four children were born there. I sup-
pose the will of Dennis Newton, probated 1873, as of Worcester, case in court
No. 43,104, to be that of this man. I have not examined it.

2145. EZRA NEWTON 6 (Charles 5 , Elisha 4 , Moses 3 , Moses 2 , Richard 1 ), son
of Charles and Tabitha (Bouker) Newton of Shrewsbury and Princeton, Mass.,
was born at Shrewsbury, November 22, 1774, and died, probably, in May, 1863,
and his will was allowed June 2, 1863. He was then of Worcester, Mass., an
old man.

He married at Weston, Mass., March 19, 1800, Ruth Hastings, daughter of
John and Esther (Pierce) Hastings* of Watertown and Weston, Mass. She was

Nathaniel Hastings 2 (s. of Thomas 1 ), b. 1661 ; d. 1694. His estate was administered
in Watertown by the wid. Mary and brother Samuel. Two children. The second was

John Hastings 3 , bapt. 1698 ; m. int. in Weston, Feb. 5 ; m. in Newton, April 6, 1726,
Mercy Ward of Newton. Seven children in Watertown. One was

John Hastings, Jr. 4 , b. Sept. 8, 1738; m. (1) Elizabeth , and had one child; m.

(2) June 17, 1778. Esther Pierce, b. 1751, dau. of Joseph and Ruth (White) Hastings of
Waltham and Woburn ; res. Watertown, and had three children, Ruth 5 , b. March 12, 1779 ;
Esther, 1784 ; Sally 5 , 1786.

Abraham Howe 1 of Marlborough in 1660, prob. came from Roxbury ; d. 1695 ; m. 1657,
Hannah Ward (dau. Williams 1 ), who d. 1717, aged 78. Ten children in Marlborough. One
was

Joseph Howe 2 , b. 1661 ; d. 1700, aged 40. He was a large land holder In Marlborough,
Lancaster and Watertown, and owned a gristmill at Feltonville before 1770. Real estate
inventoried £1442. Married, 1687, at Charlestown, Dorothy Martin, who administered the
estate. Six children. The fifth was

Abraham Howe 3 , b. 1698 ; res. Marlborough ; m. 1724, Rachel Rice, dau. of Benjamin and
Mary (Graves) Rice. Eight children. The seventh was Adonijah, b. Sept. 7, 1737 ; m. May
