THE CLAYPOOLE NAME
"The name Claypool is derived from the locality from which the name
originated; probably taken from the parish of Claypole, County of Lincoln,
Eng'land. In ancient English and early American records the name appeared
in variant spellings of Claypole, Claypol, Cleypole, Calipole, Cleipoole,
with modifications of these but Claypool and Claypoole are the forms in
evidence in America." (Media Research Bureau)

CLAYPOOL MANOR
ANCESTRAL HOME, NORTHBOROUGH, ENGLAND
PURCHASED BY JAMES CLAYPOLE, ESQ., 1572
FOR L5.000
CLAYPOLE MANOR, ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE CLAYPOOLES , is located about
85 miles North of London, just North of Peterborough, Northampton Co.,
Eng:land. "The remains of the manor-house, built by Geoffrey de la Mare
13^0, consist chiefly of the ground-floor of the gatehouse and the hall
of the house; the hall is now much subdivided, but at the west end three
original doorways, with ogee-arched heads enriched with crockets and the
ball-flower ornament, remain. It still retains its original crocketed
gable, culminating in an octagonal chimney at the west end, and a cornice
embellished with the ball-flower. It was here that Cromwell's widow died,
as also did Mrs. Cleypole, his favorite daughter, who was buried in Henry
VII 's chapel at Westminster Abbey. (Cassell's Gazeteer of Great Britain
and Ireland, 1897, Vol. N-S, p. 36)
James Cleypole, Esq., who purchased the mansion in 1572, was the great-
grandfather of the three Claypoole brothers who came to America in the
seventeenth century. His son, Adam Claypole, Esq. married Lady Dorothy,
daughter of Sir Robert Wingfield, and his wife, Elizabeth Cecil, sister
of Lord Burleigh, Prime Minister of England during the reign of Queen
Elizabeth. Adam's son. Sir John Claypole, Knight of Latham, inherited the
manor and lands of Norborough, and thirty- two acres, part of Waldram Parks,
upon his marriage to Mary (Marie) Angell, daughter of William Angell, Esq.
of London. One of their sons, Lord General John Claypole, married Elizabeth
Cromwell, daughter of Oliver Cromwell. Three other sons, Edward, Norton
and James Claypole, came to America.

TOMB OF JAMES CLAYPOLE, ESQ. (d. 1599)
CHURCH OF ST. ANDREW, NORTHBOROUGH, ENGLAND
In his "Memoirs of the Protectorate House of Cromwell," Mark Noble
begins his history of the family of James Claypole, Esq., who was buried
at Northborough, Oct. l6, 1599. "To his memory is erected a very magnifi-
cent monument in the chancel of that church; the coat of arms appears
thrice upon it... but not other inscription than, 'All good blessings unto
man, cometh of the free gift of God. ' The sentence seems to allude to
his gratitude to Providence for his singular good fortune."
"The Church was restored 1893... One tomb, dated 159^. is supposed to be
that of Oliver cromwell's widow (d. I655) ; there is also an inscribed
floor-stone to Martha, daughter of John Cleypole (d. I663)." (Cassell's
Gazetter of Great Britain and Ireland, I897, Vol. N-S, p. 36)
"Northborough (St. Andrew) a parish in the soke of Peterborough, County
of Northampton, 1 3/k miles (S.E. by S.) from Market-Deeping, containing
227 inhabitants. The living is a rectory in Archdeaconry of Northampton,
and diocese of Peterborough value in the King's Books at 10 pounds 19
shillings 7 pence? present net income 373 pounds. It is in the patronage
of the Dean and Chapter of Peterborough. The church has a fine admixture
of the Norman and the various later styles of English architecture and
contains a monument with other memorials to the family of Claypole, of
whome John married Elizabeth, daughter of Oliver cromwell, who created
him a baronet in I657, and made him master of the Horses, and a Lord of
the Bedchamber. (taken from Book 22 Topographic Dictionary of England,

INTRODUCTION
All credit for the actual publication of THE CLAYPOOLE FAMILY IN
AMERICA must go to Evelyn Claypool Bracken, 1^+80 Water St., Indiana, Pa.
Following publication of her first two volumes, an article appeared in
her local newspaper from which the following is essentially taken.
"For the past seven years, Mrs. Perry Bracken has spent every availa-
ble minute submerged in study to unravel the intricate labyrinth of her
Claypool family tree. She has expended thousands of hours digging in
the archives of many Pennsylvania County seats and has digested family
information from sources in every state. The result of her labors is
chronicled on 312 packed pages bound within two volumes that might be
considered by many geneologists the definitive work on the Claypool family
in America. . .When Mrs. Bracken says 'It was a long, hard job,* the
understatement is obvious.
"She indicates that the work was initiated as a project for the
Daughters of the American Revolution in which she set about to trace her
earliest male ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War... But Mrs.
Bracken's journey did not end there; for the DAR project had not sparked
her interest in the Claypool lineage, it had just rekindled an interest
that had been smoldering since childhood. .. Thus, the seven-year odyssey
was launched and continued to progress as Mrs. Bracken made contact
with persons throughout the country and exchanged information with more
than 200 correspondants accumulating information on nine generations
of Claypools.
"For Mrs. Bracken, having received a masters degree in business
from Bucknell University and having retired from teaching at Pennsyl-
vania State University and Florida Southern College in 19^+6, research
is not a new experience. . .By long, intensive searches through deed
transfers and death records, newspapers, in esoteric ledgers and jour-
nals in libraries and county offices throughout more than 30 states,
the labyrinth dissolved and the branches of the family tree grew and
burgeoned until more than 4,600 ancestors had been accounted for and
recorded. . .as the Claypools began to emerge as an integrated family,
the explorers time and time again discovered Claypool personalities
that stand out in Pennsylvania and American history.
•For example, in addition to family father James, whose historic
accolades include the fact that his name is the first that appears on
the Pennsylvania Charter and that he reportedly was William Penn's best
friend, there was David Chambers Claypoole, James' great-grandson and
Mrs. Bracken's great-great-great-uncle, who owned the first daily news-
paper in America. . .David Chambers Claypoole, who was the brother of
James Jr., the Armstrong County settler, printed the original copies of
the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States
and George Washington's Farewell Address, which was given to the printer
personally by Washington.
"Another distinguished Claypoole of the past would be James, grand-
son of the family founder, the earliest native artist of Pennsylvania,
whose speciality was portrait painting. He, who is Mrs. Bracken's great-
great-great-grandfather, was the father-in-law of artist James Peale...

INTRODUCTION
"Not to be fors;otten is the second cousin of Mrs. Bracken's great-
^reat-great-grandfather who had a very intimate relationship with Betsy
Ross of Flaff-making fame. Far from being the 'black sheep' of the family,
second cousin John Claypoole was Betsy's third husband...
"Major collaborators and contributers, as indicated in the prefaces
of her volumes, are Wallace Lionel Claypool of Aurora, 111; Arthur M.
Hurst of Chicago, 111; and Dr. Margaret Claypool Willoughby of Arlington,
Texas. . .
"Also contributing to the rendition of the Claypoole past as an
almost living legacy were the journals and personality of her great uncle.
Nelson Olin Claypool, who, until his death in 1952, wrote poetry and
chronicled salient features of the lives of James Claypoole, Jr. and
his descendants..." (By Tim Kinter, Staff Writer, Indiana Evening
Gazette , Indiana, Pa. ,
History is an account of what has been accomplished by people as a
whole, how they met their hardships and problems and their contribution
for future generations. Geneological and family histories are in general
demand, sought for in libraries across the coiintry and foreign lands.
And why not? In all families, there have been talented and out-
standing individuals who helped our ancestors brave the suffering and
hardships of the day. There are inspiring records to perpetuate the
memory of those to whom honor is due; they tell of people who from
humble circumstances have achieved prominence in many phases of endeavor;
and they tell of young men whose plans and ambitions were interrupted
at their country's call — many not to return, And we are proud of the
vast majority whose names do not stand out in history, but only by their
courage and devotion has our achievements been accomplished.
Claypools now living and generations of the future will be grate-
ful and indebted to Evelyn and those who have assisted her in making
this family history available. She has acknowledged the extensive help
from Mr. Arthur Hurst, without which this comprehensive geneology would
not have been possible. The collection of this information, arranging
the names in the appropriate places has been no easy task — that this
has required much time and labor no one can doubt. In view of the magni-
tude of the work, errors must have crept in, though we hope they are
but few, Any additional family information can be referred to her or
us for our files in case a revision is made at some future time.
This volume continues with the descendants of immigrant James
Claypoole, who came to Philadelphia in I683, through his son Joseph of
Philadelphia and grandson, James Claypoole, III of Virginia. The
Claypooles in this volume are mainly descendants of James Claypoole, Jr.
of Armstrong Co., Pa., a grandson of Joseph; and James, John, and Joseph
sons of James Claypool, III of Virginia.
Our sincere thanks to all those who helped in any way.
