South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert Museum)

in 1857 as a general educational library, it has been chiefly
developed by the acquisition of books on natural and applied
science. It contains also a complete set of the specifications
and other publications of the Patent Office, and recently the
bulk of the library of the Museum of Practical Geology at
Jermyn Street has been incorporated with it. Admission
free to students, etc., and by payment. Application to the
Secretary, Board of Education, S. Kensmgton. Library
open same time as museum. Closed on Sunday.

National Art Library ; Mr. G. H. Palmer, B.A. Founded
for the use of students in the Government Schools of Design
at Somerset House in 1841 ; transferred to Marlborough
House in 1852, and there opened to the public on payment
of a small fee ; moved to South Kensin^on in 1856. Vs.
R. 115,000 books, with about 160,000 pnnts and drawings,
and about 175,000 photographs; Iss. L. 57,684 volumes,
2,964 boxes, portfolios, or volumes of prints and drawings ;
2,149 boxes or portfolios of photographs; Cat. Author
catalogue, till 1890 in volumes, after 1890 on cards. Type-
written subject index to current books, and to important
articles in serial publications commenced in 1904. Printed
class lists for most subjects ; Works are lent to Schools of
Art throughout the country working in connexion with the
Board of Education. The Dyce and Forster Libraries,
administered by the same staff, contain about 33,000 volumes,
and collections of prints and drawings.
