This Library, founded in 1367, contains nearly 3,000,000 vohinLes,
250.000 maps, and 102,000 manuscripts.

Admission is sought in a letter to the Administrateur GHUral,
setting forth the nature of the applicant's work, his name, pro-
fession, and abode. Applications from foreigners should be
accompanied by a recommendation from their Embassy, or from
some responsible person known to the Administrator. Such
ticket of admission, when granted, is signed by the recipient, and
is strictly non-transferable.

Application for Books. — On entering the SaUe de Travail, each
reader is handed a btilletin personnel, which, having filled in
accurately his name and address, and tho number of ms seat, he
hands to the Superintendent. On this one of the officials enters
the names of all books taken out by him, and he is not allowed to
leave the room until he has handed the doorkeeper this buUeHn
with the official rendu stamped against every book.

Books Kept. — ^Works are kept by request for twenty-four hours,
after which they are returned to the shelves. Should any other
reader, however, apply for any of these " kept " books, they are at
his disposaL

There is a Lending-out branch of the Btbliothiqite, applying only
to books of which there are more than one copy.
