which is followed with the Eegister of the Marriage of Nicholas Russell
and Joanna Holloday in these words and figures namely ' 1=' Oct' 1 749
Nicholas Russell of S' George Hanover Square and Joanna Holloday of
S' Giles' in the Fields ' and ends with the .... Register of the Marriage
of William Wright and Ann Hobbs in these words and figures viz. ' 25 '
(referring to March 1754 which is set at the top of the Page following)
(that is to say) ' From October 1753 to This Day 1136.' At the beginning
and end of the writing in each of which said Books so far as relates to
the Registers of Maniages he this Deponent has set his name and that he
believes the said Books to be the original and true Register Books of
Marriages celebrated by the said Alexander Keith and his assistants some
thereof, namely these preceding the year 1743 or 1744 in May Fair
Chapel and those after that period iu a private Dwelling House near to
the said Chapel and this Deponent further says that the reason for such
his belief is that in the year 1743 or 1744 at which time the said
Alexander Keith left May Fair Chapel he this Deponent was a^Dpointed
Clerk of the said Chapel and continued so about twenty years during
which time he became and was intimately acquainted with the said
Alexander Keith, and also vdth the several persons who ofliciated from
time to time as Clerk to the said Alexander Keith and thereby had
frequent opportunities of seeing and did often see the said Books which
he was told had been and from his own observation believes always were
used by the said Alexander Keith and his assistants for the j^urpose of
registering therein such Marriages as they from time to time celebrated
in the aforesaid Chapel and dwelling House and for no other piu'pose
whatsoever except as to the Registers of certain Baptisms which appear
at the end of the Book marked with the Letter A and as to certain
accounts which appear at the beginning and end of the Book marked
with the Letter B. And this Deponent saith that the said three Books
are the same which this Deponent brought from the Fleet Prison from
amongst the effects of the said Alexander Keith after his decease and
which afterwards he this Deponent caused to be delivered to some person
ordered as this Deponent was then informed by the Rector and Church
Wardens or the Vestry of the said Parish to demand the same of this
Deponent for the use of the said Parish.

" Sworn at the House of M'' James

of S' George Hanover Square this 14* Day
of ffebruary 1780 before me

PREFACE. Vll

The first of these books, marked A, is in one handwriting, and each
entry is signed A. Keith until the 24th of April 1743. The same wi-iting
continues in Book B to the 29th March 1748, when there is a note, "Mr.
Bailie begins to write." The remainder of Book B and Book C are in
the same handwriting.

When Mr. John Southerden Burn wrote his book on the Fleet
Registers in 1833, there were at the Bishop of London's Registry seven
volumes of Registers at Mayfair Chapel, which he describes on p. 102 as
follows : —

No. 1. A short folio, commencing 19 March 1729, and ending 31 May 1731,

intituled " Dr. Keith's Eegestar Book of Marriages, No. 3 May Fair."

It contains about 1300 entries, and has an index.
No. 2. A thin short folio, commencing 29 Sept. 1747, ending 28 Sept. 1749,

intituled " The Register Book of Marriages performed by John Grierson,

Minister, at May Fair Chapel," and endorsed " No 2 Register of

Marriages, 1747, 1748, 1749, May Fair." It contains 2403 entries, and

at the other end are Baptisms from 1747 to 1752, several of which are

of the Peterborough family.
No. 3. A short thick folio, commencing 29 Sept. 1749, ending 31 Oct. 1753,

indorsed " No. 3 Register for Marriages, May Fair." It contains 6258

entries.
No. 4. A short folio of Fleet Marriages, at one end of which are " Marriages

performed by Mr. Symson at May Fair in 1748." It commences

12 April 1748, and contains 86 entries, after which is added, " No. 86,

all married by Mr. Symson at May Fair."
No. 5. A folio, intituled " The Register Book of Marriages begun April 9,

1748, at the New Chapel, May Fair." The Marriages are all by Mr.

Symson, but many of them appear to be Fleet Marriages. It has an

index.
No. 6. A small quarto, commencing 9 Dec. 1750, ending 25 March 1754,

intituled " The Register Book of Marriages performed by the Reverend

Mr. Peter Symson, Mr. Fran^ Denevau, for Keith, May Fair."
No. 7. A thin foHo, ending 25 March 1754, indorsed " No. 1, Dr. Keith's

Book. The Register for Marriages, 1 November 1753, 1754, May

Fair." It has an index.

These books have been carefully examined with the Mayfair Registers
at St. George's, Hanover Square, and in all cases appear to be diiplicates
thereof, with the exception of No. 1, and a few entries in No. 4. They
are now in the custody of the Registrar-General at Somerset House, and
by his permission the entries that are not in the copy at St. George's

Vlll PREFACE.

have been transcribed and added to this Vohime (see p. 285). In my
opinion those at Somerset House contain the entries originally made by
the clergyman who performed the ceremony, and were subsequently
transcribed into the books kept at the Chapel.

According to Mr. John Southeeden Buen, this Chapel was built
about the year 1730, and was one of those for the performance of the
marriage ceremony without obtaining a licence, or publication of banns,
or consent of parents. These marriages were called clandestine mar-
riages, and although irregular, were at that time perfectly valid and
binding.

The Rev. Alexander Keith was appointed to officiate there. He
began to marry ad libitum, and Lord Oepoed describes him to have
constructed a very bishopric of revenue. He advertised in the papers
the advantage of a wedding at his Chapel at Mayfair.

The then Rector of St. George's, Hanover Square, commenced a suit
ao-aiust him at Doctors' Commons. He was decreed excommunicated on
the 27th of October 1742. In April 1743 he was committed to the Fleet
Prison.

This is not surprising, for the revenue accruing to Keith mixst
have materially affected the pocket of the Rector of St. George's, Hanover
Square.

The number of marriages registered at each Church is shewn in the
following table :

In 1743 there were 117 marriages in one month only at Mayfair.

On referring to the Register, p. 33, it will be observed that there
then occurs an interruption of thirteen mouths and three days. This,
however, did not prevent the continuance of marriages in this district,
for in The General Advertiser of 20 July 1 744 occurs the following adver-
tisement : —

" To prevent mistakes, the little New Chapel, in May Fair, near Hyde

PREFACE. IX

Park Corner, is in the Corner House opposite to the City Side of the
Great Chapel, and within ten yards of it, and the Minister and Clerk live
in the same Corner House where the little Chapel is, and the Licence on
a Crown Stamp. Minister and Clerk's Fees, together with the Certificate,
amount to One Guinea as heretofore, at any Time 'till Four in the After-
noon : And that it may be the better known, there is a Porch at the
Door like a Country Church Porch."

Again, in The London Gazeteer of January 12, 1749 : —
" The way to Mr. Keith's Chapel is thro' Piccadilly, by the End of
St. James's Street, and down Clarges Street, and turn on the Left-hand.
The Marriages (together with a Licence on a Five Shilling Stamp, and
Certificate) are carried on for a Guinea, as usual, and Time till Fom- in the
Afternoon, by another regular Clergyman, at Mr. Keith's Little Chapel in
May- Fair, near Hyde Park Corner, opposite the great Chapel and within
Ten Yards of it. There is a Porch at the Door like a Country Chm-ch
Porch."

The marriages recommenced on 30th May 174i, and were celebrated
by one of his assistants — the Eev. Peter Stmson, Francis Denevatt,
the Eev. John Geierson, or Mr. Walker.

Mr. Keith was probably in prison for about fifteen years. He died
in the Fleet Prison on the 13th December 1758. In 1753 he published
a pamphlet, " Observations on the Act for preventing Clandestine Mar-
riages."

The Eegister contains several notable marriages, but it would be
beyond the limits of this Preface to enumerate them. In its pages are to
be found, amongst many others, the records of the marriages of the Duke
of Hamilton and Miss Elizabeth Gunning, on the 14th of February 1752.
Horace Walpole, in a letter to Mr. Mann dated 27 Feb. 1752, says, "The
event which has made most noise since my last is the extensive
wedding of the youngest of the two Gunnings, .... they were married
with a ring of the bed-curtain, at half an hour after twelve at night, at
Mayfair Chapel."*

Lord George Bentinck and Mary Davies were married here on the
29th of June 1753.

Sir James Dashwood, Bart., of Northbrook, married Elizabeth, the
dau. and coheir of Edward Spencer, Esq., of Eendlesham in Suffolk, on

X PREFACE.

the 17th of February 1738-9. They had three daughters, one married
the Duke of Manchester, another the Earl of Galloway, and a third
Lucy Knightley of Fawsley, Esq.

On the I7th of March 1746, Lord Stanley married Mrs. Lucy Smith.
He was the eldest son of Sir Edward Stanley, who succeeded as llth Earl
of Derby, and the ancestor of the present Earl : and,

On Christmas Day 1744, the Duke of Cleveland was married at this
chapel.

The marriages at Mayfair were stopped by the passing of Lord
Hardwick's Marriage Act, which came into operation on the 25th of
March 1754; but on referring to the Register it will be seen that no
fewer than sixty-one couples were married on the previous day.

The best thanks of the Society ai-e due to the Eev. Capel Cure, the
Rector of St. George's, Hanover Square, for the permission he has given
to transcribe the Registers ; and also to the Registrar-General for kindly
permitting them to be completed from the volumes in his possession ; and
last, but not least, to Mr. John Eedes, who with his usual accuracy has
made a most faithful transcript.

Circumstances beyond the Editor's control have unfortunately delayed
the earlier publication of this Volume.
