Note.— In the present and subsequent Tables the Occupations are arranged according to the principle of classification adopted in the preceding Summary. The figures
prefixed to the Occupations indicate the several Orders and Sub-orders in which they have been classed ; but where a particular Occupation is inapplicable to the sex, or where
no persons are classified as following it, the item is omitted in order to save space. The Occupations classed under " Others " in the several Sub-orders appear iu detail in the
Summary Table for I3ngland and Wales. . . ,. .,

The Tables do not always give the total number of persons wholly or partially following any particular Occupation ; as many individuals have two or more Occupations, under
only one of whicli (generally the most important) they are classed.

The numbers returned under trades, manufactures, and some professions, include apprentices, assistants, and workpeople, as well as employers. Very young persons arc
thus sometimes classed under Occupations followed chiefly by adults.

The Table is read tints :—In the West Bidinff of York 5180 Commercial Clerics were returned of all ages, of whom 248 were a^ed 10 and under 16 years, 1448 aged 1" ojh
■under 20 years, 1103 aged 20 and under 25 years, 1190 aged 25 and tmder 35 years, 660 aged 35 and under 45 years, and so on for each respective column of age. Hic Ordei- 6
