..On 25SEP1809, Philip Hansel & wife, Hannah, sold to Morgan Huff property near Pumpkin
Hall for $200. On 21I0V1814, Philip Hansel bought from Thomas Parkinson the following
Allegany County lots: #3947, 3950, 3951, & a 7th lot called Squirrel Neck for $200.

Philip Sr.'s connection with the Clapsaddle's is reinforced by records in Franklin
County, PA showing that in 1812, Philip Hentzel was granted administration papers for the
estate of a Susannah Clapsaddle.

Philip Sr. died without a will. As a result, a Villiam Ridgely was appointed Trustee
for the estate of Philip Hansel Sr. on 18APR1822. Jacob acted as administrator of the
estate from 1820 to 1823. Jacob sued his brothers & sisters in Allegany County Maryland
Court of Chancery on 0CT1823(Book l,p.45) to force the sale of their dad's farm. The
money was to reimburse Jacob for $44.89 that Jacob had overpaid the creditors of Phillip
Sr. 4 in addition Jacob claimed that Phillip Sr. owed him $400. Interestingly, Jacob had
been living on the farm & paying the estate $80/year rent since his father's death.

Since brothers, (Jeorge, John, & Solomon, were minors, the court appointed a John Hayes
as their guardian in the case.

The court ordered the sale to the highest bidder to be held between noon & 3:00PM
23APR1822 with H of bid payable immediately and the remainder in three equal annual
installments.

The Court papers describe the land as containing:

"..About 137 acres of Land, 70-80 acres of which are cleared, and laid off into
convenient fields with about 15 acres of good timothy meadow the residue in

:'off parcels to Henry Koontz (husband of cousin (^therine Hensel (#160-1-5) probably in
preparation for move to Pennsylvania. On llJAiri847, Jacob's son, Philip, paid a $3.00
fee to the Greene County Orphan's Court to begin proceedings to sell the family farm
after Jacob's death. On 9MY1848, The Orphan's Court ordered sale of the 400 acre farm
in Monongahela Township which was sold to Samuel Hartley for $9,910. On 9MAY1848,
Orphan's Court appointed Otis Minor guardian for Jacob's daughters: Rebecca & Johanna,
both over 14, 4 Benjamin Maple guardian for Sarah, John, 4 Mary with certificates issued
to guardians in Uovember 1851. In the 1850 Monongalia Twp. , Greene Co. , PA Census,
Jacob's widow, Rebecca, was living with Joshua Garlow(20), William 4 Hannah Coyard(20), 4
her children: Sarah (15), Mary (13), 4 John (9) Hansel. Her older children had departed for
Iowa earlier 4 she probably accompanied brother-in-law, John Hansel (080-8) to Iowa in
1851. In 1870, the widow, Rebecca, was living with son, Lawrence, 4 daughter, Mary Ann,
in Mallory Township, Clayton County, Iowa. A Henry Preston, 53, 4 possibly brother to
Rebecca was living with John 4 Mary Hansel in the 1850 Monongalia County, VA Census 4 was
listed as an idiot (retarded) .

. , (80-3) Catherine 4 husband, Jesse Spurrier, were living in Allegany County in the 1830
MD Census 4 must have moved to Guernsey County, Ohio prior to 1840.
. . (080-4) Margaret, upon the death of her husband, Jacob Workman, was left all his
possessions to share with children. John Engels 4 son, Solomon Workman, served as
administrators of the estate. Jacob died in Greenville Twp. , Somerset County,
Pennsylvania. Sons 4 possibly widow, Margaret, settled in Wharton Township, in Fayette
County, Pennsylvania near George Hansel' s (080-7) family.

. . (080-5) Sarali Hansel sold land to Henry Koontz, husband of cousin Catherine Hensel
(#160-1-5) for $25.00 in Allegany County. She followed brother John to Monongalia
County, Virginia (WV) 4 later to Iowa.

. . (080-7) (^orge is probably the same George Hansel who is buried in Fayette County, PA
although local histories have him married to Frances Christner vs. the Allegany County
marriage records indicating at least first marriage was to Fanny Musselman. Fayette Co.
PA probate records refer to his wife as ' Fanny' (1806-1859) . Executor of Fanny's 1859
estate was Solomon Workman (s/o Margaret Hansel Worknan). Son, George Jr., was Justice of
the peace in Wharton Twp. , of Fayette Co. , PA in 1877. He had married Mary Romesburgh 4
they had 13 children on their 400 acre farm in Wharton Township.

. . (080-9) Solomon is the only son of Philip to remain in Allegany County with many of the
present Hansels of Allegany County tracing their descent from him.

. . (982) John Sr. with brother, George, & father took possession in 1788 of a 50 acre
military lot in the area of Cumberland, Maryland granted him for service in the
Revolutionary War. His prior residence was probably Frederick County, MD. He may have
also have been the John Eckhart mentioned as an early settler of the Accident area of
Garrett County, Maryland prior to 1800. On 20APR1805, at the request of Andrew Bruce, a
deed dated 26JAN1805 was recorded in Allegany County, MD in which Susanna Gardner Bruce
of Frederick Co. , MD deeded a parcel of land in Allegany Co. for five shillings to Andrew
Bruce, John huff, Thomas Parkins, & John Eckhart for the purpose building a church or
meeting house i use as a burying ground.
