John Sr. from 1814 to 1827 acquired 150 acres of land in lots #1641, 1642, & 1643 in
Allegany County from: Samuel TomlinsonCson of John & Polly 'Mathews' Tomlinson, Villiam h
Sarah(Sally) 'Mathews' Mattingly of Muskingum Co., Ohio, James Mathews, George Mathews,
George Mathews, George Mathews, 4 Joseph 4 Betsy 'Mathews' Dilly. These five Mathews
children had been deeded each a fifth part of the land by John Glazner, who evidently
acted as their guardian as heirs of the estate of Chitty & Fanny Mathews who died without
issue & this must have been aunt & uncle to Villiam, George, James, Betsy, & Sally
Mathews. John Sr. paid each $300 for their 1/5 interests in the 150 acres ($1, 500) .

On 9DEC1835, John & Mary Eckhart deeded land to Mathew St. Clair Clarke of Washington
D.C. for $20,000 & signed their names with their mark 'J'.

As a slaveowner, the 1830MD Census showed that John Sr. owned 8 slaves; 4 males under
10 yrs. old, 3 10-24 yrs. , & 1 female 10-24 yrs. He also employed 1 free colored female
age 24-36 years old.

. . John's probate of 15SEP1836(37?) revealed that :

John Hansel & Adam Eckhart acted as co-administrators. Value of the estate was
$24,970.74 cash. A long list of claimants paid miscellaneous sums Including a Delila
Eckhart & Jacob Hansel who owed or paid estate small sums.

The heirs received: Mary Eckhart, widow $ 7, 200. 00

John Eckhart, heir $ 1, 800. 00

John McGettigan, heir $ 1 , 800 . 00

John Forsythe , heir $ 1 . 800 . 00

John Hansel, heir $ 1, 800. 00

Adam Eckhart , heir $ 1 , 800 . 00

John Hansel, Administrator of Estate of Jacob Eckhart... $ 1,800.00

Samuel Bevans, Guardian for John S. Bevans $ 1,800.00

Adam Eckhart, Guardian for David Eckhart $ 1,800.00

. . . .Adam Eckhart & John Hansel split Administrator's commission $ 1. 248.53

Maryland law evidently provided that John Sr.'s daughter's inheritance be paid to their
husbands. Jacob Eckhart had evidently died and thus John Hansel was his estate's
administrator. One daughter of John Sr. evidently was deceased and thus Samuel Bevans
acted as guardian for their only child: John S.

Eckhart , John (Continued) #«82-C

.. (083) Mary Eckhart' s will of 3JUL1843 was probated July 1850 & read:

"In the name of god amen, I Mary Ann Eckhart now of Monongalia County Virginia being weak in body but sound
mind and memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of life and the necessity of arranging my verdly if fiirs -
do make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other or former wills and Testaments, First I
hereby direct that my just debts shall first be paid, and after payment of the same and my funeral expenses I
hereby devise and bequeath as follows vis; Secondly - That after my decease I direct that ay black woman
flalinda shall be free - and that all necessary papers showing her freedoa be furnished to her,"

"Thirdly - That the children of said flalinda shall be free in manner following to Vz the boys at the age of
thirty five and the girls at the age of twenty five Vs, Dennis of the age of 16 on the 5 of August 1843 -
William 11 year old 4 February 1844 - Matilda 8 year old 16 of 1843 - Livinia Six years old the 16 May 1843 -
Fielding three years old the 22nd of February 1843 and Martha one year old the 22 August in the year 1843 - The
above named being the children of said Malinda - and any further ejicrease that said Malinda may have previous
to my decease shall be freed in like manner at the ages of 25 and 35 years - Fourthly - to my Sona Adam Eckart
and John Eckert I hereby give and bequeath the before mentioned negroes and ercrease until they shall by this
will become free, and all the rest of my Estate of all kinds whatsoever, believing that the seaid Adas i John
Eckart have greater claims upon me than any of the rest of my children except my afflicated son Oavid(1850
Census listed as an Idiot) who is sufficiently provided for - But I hereby direct that of ay Estate, ay son
John shall have my house hold k kitchen furniture to himself,"

"Fifthly I hereby appoint Edgar C, Wilson Executor to this my last will and testament, In Testimony whereof
I have hereto set my hand and seal this 3d day of July in the year 1843" Mary Ann '/' Eckhert

,, Witnesses; James Evans, Peter Davis of Monongalia County, Virginia(WV),

In August 1850 the black slaves were appraised thus: Dennis (23yrs) , VilliamdTTrs) , &
Fielding(10yrs) at S220 each. Lucinda was appraised at $200. All were handed over to
son, Adam. Approximately $350 was owed the estate by Evan Ellicott 4 Richard Grays for
purchase of unnamed negroe children(Lavinia, Martha, & Matilda ?). The notes were Judged
worthless because Ellicott was insolvent and Grays was a blackman without property. The
notes were marked 'B' and returned to the court.

On 8APR1836 in Allegany County, Adam & John Eckhart Jr. filed for a ?rlt of Lunacy
against their mother & case was carried to 1848, The outcome is unknown, but she seemed
to be managing her own farm in Allegany County with several slaves & son, David, living
with her. Whatever the dispute, Mary Ann Eckhart was living with Adam Eckhart in the
1850 Monongalia County, Virginia Census just down the road from daughter, Mary
Hansel (082-1).

.. (082-2) Jacob's wife may have remarried after his death to a James Anderson (b. cl818MD)
& had the following children: Uancy b.cl837MD ml854 Joseph Garret, William b.cl839MD,
James b.cl842MD, Westley b.cl844JtD, Rebecca b. 1846MD, Edward b.cl849MD. Son. John
Eckhart, is living with them in the 1850MD Census & is listed as an heir in her 1881
probate with sister Rachel. (Josiah Porter served as guardian for Jacob's children, Rachel
& John Eckhart in John Eckhart Sr.'s probate). Each of his children received $450 as
their share of inheritance from John Eckhart Sr.'s estate.

.. (082-3) Sarah's husband served as guardian for their son's (John S. Sevan's) inheritance
from John Eckhart Sr.'s estate, which he turned into $2210 by 1850. John S. Bevans
followed his Aunt, Mary Hansel (082-1) , to Iowa & in the 1860 Clayton Co. lA Census he was
living next to John & Mary 'Eckhart' Hansel. In the 1870 I A Census, John & Mary Hansel
were giving shelter to two of the Bevan's children: Catherine Ann & Charles. John
Sevan's widow, Mary Elizabeth, remarried a Joseph Wolf (father of Sophrona Hansel wife of
Strother - (#040-7) in Beulah, Kansas 4 died in 1914 at Tacoma, Washington. Jobn Bevan' S

..(084) Bussel Sr. appears in Census's as 'Darra' & ' Darrew' . Vidow, Deliverance, may

have gone to Chautauqua County Sew York to be near Russel 's brother, George. 1882 Clayton -j

Co. lA History says Deliverance died in Ashtabula Co. Ohio. Russel Sr. was quite likely

born in either Albany or Columbia Co. , 5ew York.

..(085) Deliverance is mentioned in the Vestfield 5Y Republican(APR1868 & V.ll,#10 Wed.

2JU51875) as living to 90 years of age & the mother of Nancy Kimball, a Vestfield

.. (086-5) ¥illiaa appears in the 1850 Chautauqua Co. FY Census living with brother,

Artemus.

. . <086-6) Hubbard was a grain dealer in the 1900 Clayton Co. lA Census. (I have some

. (092) William was living next to Thomas in the 1830 Dunkard Twp. , Greene County, PA 4
is the probable father or guardian of Thomas. However another male 20-30 is living with
William in 1830 Census causing confusion.

William could be a guardian of Thomas who may have resulted from the marriage of a
Thomas Wilkinson to Sarah Long in 1800 in Greene County(per Leakey's 'Ten Itile Country').
This Thomas seemed to be deceased by 1810 with the widow, Sarah Long, appearing in the
Dunkard Twp. census of Greene County with 1 male 10-16 & two daughters 10-16. However
this boy would be to old to be our Thomas. Thus I feel more confident with William as
father.
