. .Josiah Sr. appears on a Warwick RI list of militiamen unable to properly equip

themselves (Capt. Price's Company).

. . Vhiting 7T History commented that Josiah Sr. removed to Vhiting between 1784-87 with

Stukely Stone i Christopher Stone. From the death record of Elanor we know that Josiah

Sr. arrived 1788/89.

. . Josiah seems to have been called Joseph also as indicated by the Whiting, VT birth

record for Josiah Jr. , which referred to his parents as Joseph & Lois Stone (Josiah Jr.

s/o Joseph?). The tombstone in the Charlotte Center Cemetery bears the name Joseph

resting by Lois Stone.

. . Josiah 4 Lois of Coventry RI on 13DEC1788 sold some land in Warwick to Anne Bennett fan

6 shillings probably in preparation for move to Vermont & for a low price to keep

property in family.

. . 161tAR1793, Josiah Stone in partnership with Abraham Chatterdon (married to Lydia

Stone/sister of Josiah?) bought land from Amos Standly ITorth of Whiting for iAQ.

. . 29JA]J1793, Josiah i Stukely Stone registered their earmarks for 'cattle, sheep and

other creatures'. Josiah' s earmark was 'a whole crop off the right ear <* a slit in the

end of the LammsT" .

..27FEB1798, Thomas Stone sold Josiah Stone land Sorth of Whiting for $166.66. Ichabod 4

Joel Foster were witnesses a Joel Foster certified the deed in his capacity as Justice of

the Peace.

..08SEP1799, Stukely Stone, acting as Constable of Whiting & Addison County, slapped a

lien on one hundred acres of land owned by Josiah Stone for $1.27 in unpaid taxes.

..10MAR1801, Josiah Stone sold land to Stukely Stone for $200, with Stukely Stone

certifying the deed in his capacity as Town Clerk of Whiting.

.. (173) Lois lived to almost 100 years of age and in a letter probably written by Sila's

wife, Marita, Lois was described as a woman who liked to entertain people with her

historical recollections including British Gen. Burgoyne marching past her home after his

defeat at Saratoga in 1777. The same letter mentions that Lois was ten years old at time

of father's death during Revolutionary War, which was around 1778 which would imply that

she was actually born cl767. Lois is remembered as having used thorns rather than pins

in her sewing.

. . (172-9) Silas settled in the Conewago area of Cattauragus Co. ITT. Wife, Marita, died

in 1884 at Richmond in McHenry Co. IL. She was the daughter of John 4 Cathy Wheeler

York.

. . (174) Sylvester Sr. filed a pension application on 2JAiri834 on the basis of his service
during the Revolutionary Var. Pension application #819264 revealed:

1772, Sylvester Sr. removed from Westerly RI to Groton CT when about 20 years old &
lived in that area about li4 years.

1774, Removed to Guilford, Vindham County, Vermont on the Connecticut River & lived
there about 30 years.

1304, Removed to Vestford in Chittenden County, Vermont where his uncle S aunt, David &
Jemima Crandall (#698-12), lived.

1809-1825, Lived in Plymouth, Chenango County, Hew York. Probably influenced by
Ezekial Crandall (b. 1749RI) & Christopher Crandall <b. 1748RI) who settled there also 4
appear in the 1335 Revolutionary Var List of Pensioners.

1820, Sylvester was living next to Andrew Stone near Plymouth.

1820-45, He lived at Vestford in Chittenden County, Vermont 4 in 1841 was living with a
probable nephew/son-in-law, John Coon.

From MAY 1775- JAIT 1776, Sylvester served as a private in Capt. Ichabad Dexter'
of Col. Voodbridge's Regiment. In his pension application, Sylvester recalled:

"...As soon as company was full marched dierectly to Cambridge, Mass. (Outside Boston)-
where we arrived on the day of the Battle at Bunker Hill, though not in season to be
engaged in the battle - the battle was over before we arrived.." He served the remainder
of this hitch at LechemereC?) Point near Cambridge " . . . Vhere the British took the cattle
of the American citizens there - I was engaged in a skirmish with the British..."

From JAU 1775-SEP 1775, He remained at home in Guilford.

company

I

Crandall, Sylvester (Continued) #174-C

From SEP 1776-TOV 1776, He served a two month hitch in Capt. Hugh McClelIan?'s Company
of CO. Mosely's Regt. of Gen Benj . Lincoln's Brigade, Sylvester recalled " . . . Ve marched
immediately to Hartford, Connecticut thence to New Haven, Connecticut thence to New York
and was stationed about a mile from King's Bridge - a few miles from British - who had
been there about 48 hrs. , - and were driven from their station soon after the
commencement of the battle..."

Thru MAY-AUG 1777, Sylvester Sr. served in Capt. Elijah Herrish's Company of Col.
Graham's Segiment (Gen. Clinton's Brigade). He marched from Guilford thru corner of
Massachusetts to Sew York taking 40-50 Tories (British Loyalists) prisoner 4 killing
one (Isaac Spurs). He then was on garrison duty for two months at Fort Independence (4 mi.
S. of Ft. Montgomery, FY) where "...I was taken sick & 8-10 days before my term of
service expired, I recvd. a furlough from Capt. Herrish on acct. of my sickness. . and left
the service about the 1st Aug 1777..."

Daughters, Mary & Polly Fisk (perhaps one & the same person), indicated in their letters
that Sylvester's farm was 15-18 miles up the Connecticut River from Greenfield,
Massachusetts on the Vermont line.

From 1834 on, Sylvester was receiving a $25/annum pension from the Federal Government
for his service during the Revolutionary War. He also listed acquaintances in the
Chettenden area: Aron Howe & Vm. Weaver as well as Rev. Simon Parmalee.

Chenango land records reveal that he purchased lots #90 & 91 in the Plymouth area in
1808 from the Brooks estate & sold the last acres in 1825. The transactions never
exceeded $250.

. . (174-1) Sylvester Jr. lived in Highgate & Vestford, VT before finally settling in
Canada .

.. (174-2) Joseph in the late 1790' s had owned & sold land in Guilford 7T. In the Spring
of 1806 he moved his family from Leyden, Massachusetts to the S.E. section of Plymouth
Twp. , Chenango Co. , New York, joining his father-in-law, Phineas Crumb, who had preceded
him 4 built a log house in the wilderness. Joseph moved his family 4 goods via a two
horse sleigh. He was a stone engraver & many of his works can be seen at the Aldrich
Cemetery located between Norwich & S. Plymouth in Chenango County.

. . (174-6) An UnnAned daughter might be the Sally Crandall who married Elisha Sabin on
13OCT1802 at Halifax, Windham County, Vermont.

John Jr. #134-1- From census records: 2 boys, 5 girls

. . (184) John Sr. as early as 01MY1788 bought 175 acres of land from Samuel
Kinkaid (neighbor) in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in partnership with a John Baird for
£177,10.0. Witnesses to this deed were Joseph Caldwell 4 David Frame. The 'Horn Plat
Maps' show that John Vilkersan warranted 151 acres 26JUH1785 (surveyed 31I0V1813 & patented
9SEP1815) in Springhill Twp. , Fayette County, PA fronting on the Monongahela River across
from Greene County with creeks inside the Uorth 4 South boundaries.

In 1783, Fayette County PA taxed John Sr. on 150 acres of land, 3 horses, 4 two cows.
In 1786, he was taxed £13.4.0.

On 20SEP1815, John Sr. sold 75 acres 4 appurtenances in Springhill Twp. to son, John
Jr., for $1,000. The deed was recorded in Fayette County PA on 80CT1818. One wonders if
the other 75 acres was sold by Villiam.

Clues to his parents may be in his Jew Jersey native neighbors such as Theo Philips 4
also a Villiam Wilkinson served in the Westmoreland County PA militia during the
Revolutionary War.
