John #1360-2-l-John b.FEB1695. .

. . (1360) John Sr. was "distracted", for wife, Aiica, had to sue in court to have her
appointed guardian over her husband's affairs as her petition to the General Court in
Boston indicates:

"That whereas he ys Jn for many years past has been bereaved of ye right use of his
reason some times more sober as to quietly to walk ye streets, but always utterly void ofl"
common prudence needful to ye managaing of an estate, as ye know him can declare and as
the imprudent disposal of a considerable part o his estate doth 4 may sufficiently
evidence. And whereas ys his condition (whc has been for a space of near 20 years) he
has att several tiems(being inveigled & persuaded by such as very well knew his
incapacity of manageing such affairs) disposed S conveyed & givin assurance in other i
words, without the knowledge of his freinds. Si we, he himselfe is utterly ignorant, both '
as to persons to whom, time when & consideration for wch, he gave i made such sd deeds
and conveyances. " '

"Whence yor humble petitioner her complaint arrises yt his family and posterity are
oppressed, i greatly injured, by being held unjustly out of yr propper rights."

"And whereas ye sd Jno is now 4 continues as Incapable of prudent managaing his
business as forierly i therefore as probable further to squander 4 waste his remaining
estate; Do. .. petition. .. that such cours may be taken as yt yor Humble petitioner 4 ;
indigent family, may have redress of grievances..." j

. . . 07MAY1684 Signed: 'Alice Eaton" ' \

..The court appointed committees to investigate, and Alice filed a second petition, but i

there is no evidence that she recovered the lands given away by her husband. \

. . John Jr . died a few months after marriage with his son born four months after his j

death. i

.. (1360-4) Villiaa inherited land containing 'the Great Rack. .. enjoying the extensive ■•

view of the Charles River meadows of Raxbury & Jewtan Hills across from Boston". \

. , (1376) John Sr. on 28JUN1725, bought 127 acres, Sc, of Tristam Derby for £125. On
8MR1738, he deeded to son Jonathan, for love, 4C, 50 acres of upland and meadow west
side of Pauchassett River (Cranston) , a little eastwardly of my dwelling house.

John Sr.'s will was proved 20SEP1759 4 he named his wife Abigail executrix. He left
his wife all his indoor movables. To son Joseph he left all his outdoor movables, viz:
all my cattle, horses, sheep, hogs, fowls, carts, ploughs, &c, and to him all wearing
apparel. To the rest of the children, 5§, each, viz: to Hannah, George, John, William,
Jonathan, Ruth, Benjamin, Abigail, Lydia, Anne and Prudence. These had received some
estate before. To granddaughter Abigail Fisk, £50, at eighteen or marriage.
According to Richard Stone(p. 127) "John Stone was an active 4 industrious man, possessing
by gift & purchase, a large Real Estate. He was a man of genial temperment, mirthful 4
sportive, even to the close of life, 4 left a large family in good circumstances...".

He may have died at home of son, William, 4 was burried in the family burying plot.
Richard Stone reported that sometime before 1867, the Trustees of the Old Stone Burial
Ground (a few miles S. W. of Elmwood on Pontiac Rd. near Cranston) removed the bones of
John 4 his two wives, Hannah Barnes 4 Abigail Faster, to that place. They were buried
from five and a half to six feet deep, on a small ridge of land near a branch of the
Pochasset river in a bluish, sandy clay. Although he had been buried 107 years, Hannah
154 years, 4 Abigail 106 years, the skeletons were in an entire state of preservation
with Hannah's hair still braided & wound in a coil as 'sound 4 perfect as the day she bad
been laid down to sleep' in the early 1700' s.

, stone, John (Cont. ) #1376-C

. . (1376-1) John Jr. was involved in several land transactions in Varwick RI beginning in
1741 thru 1752 & possibly later. He was a land 4 mill owner. He died in an accidental
shooting while hunting ducks on the Pawtuxet River with another hunter. He raised his
head from the canoe as his partner fired & was shot in the head & killed.
.. (1376-2) (leorge died at son, Ezra's, home in 5.V. corner of RI bounded by MA 4 CT.
. . (1376-3) Vllliaa was buying land in Varwick from 1745 thru 1758 from brothers, Benj . 3r
John as well as Joseph Rhodes & James Carder. He sold land in Varwick from 1747 thru

1778 to John Stone, Henry Randall, Jeremiah Villiams, & Vm. Aldrich. In 1763 at Johnston
RI, Villlam served as co-executor with Thomas Vestcott of Samuel Vestcott's estate. In

1779 he sold the family farm(with old Stone Cemetery) in Cranston to Dr. Vm. Aldrich 4
moved with son to Coventry. He was known as 'Captain Villiam Stone' & died cl785 at
Coventry of a long & tedious illness.

. . (1376-8) Benjaaln made a strong presence in Varwick first purchasing land there in 1745
from John Dexter St in 1749 from Jonathan Stone. He had lived near a sheet of water known
as 'Ben's pond'. In the early 1780' s, his brother , Joseph, appealed to the town
officials of Varwick to appoint a guardian over Benjamin because he had become
incompetent which they agreed to. On 14SEP1789, the town officials, citing an
improvement in his condition, restored Benjamin to Freeman status 4 removed the guardian.
His will was proved 30DEC1798 & his wife Mary mentioned as well as Hannah Stone, d/o of
Josiah<#344), who was to get 30 Spanish Dollars 4 half the furniture after wife Mary's
death. Jo children were mentioned although the Town allowed monies for a coffin for
•Benjamin Bethwick Stone's' child on 10JU11799. John Salisbury was to act as
Administrator 4 Jonathan Villiams, Joseph Remington, 4 Randall Carder were witnesses. In
the 1799 final settlement a Patience Stone was paid £14, John Stone £1 4 a Peter Stone
owed the estate £118.55 4 Josiah Stone £14.60.

. . (1376-9) Joseph was responsible for having James Carder appointed guardian over
brother, Benjamin, in the 1780' s because he feared his brother was incompetent to handle
his estate. Joseph 4 Anne were buying 4 selling land in Varwick from 1752 thru 1795,
although residents of Providence. Joseph was called 'Deacon Joe' 4 had served as a
Deacon in the local Baptist Church. He established a 'new Stone Cemetery' on his
property.

. . (1378-5) Samuel was a member of the Cranston Town Council for many years.

. . (1378-7) Hannah is referred to by Richard Stone as the daughter of Nathan

Vestcott (2756-5-5) but his will does not mention her. In any case she was b. 1735 4 to

young to marry Jonathan Stone in 1743, mother Josiah in 1744 4 Mercy in 1749. The second!

choice would be Hannah b. 1718 & d/o Jasiah(2756-5) but Vhitman says that she died in

1723. Thus the last guess is the Hannah named above. This is supported by the fact that

Hannah Vestcott Stone named her children: Josiah, Hannah, & Phebe. In addition, the

widow Hannah Stone sold land in 1777 with Stukely(1378-4) 4 his son, Rueben Vestcott, as

witnesses fas a brother 4 nephew might). In addition, Stukely witnessed Josiah

Stone' s (#344) 1774 Johnston deed of sale further indicating a relationship between the

Vestcotts 4 Stones.
