John Sr. helped build the first bridge over the Charles River. He was on the Dedham

. . (2752) Hugh Sr. was a servant in Boston to a Mr. John Paine. He moved to Varwick,
Rhode Island and on 14MAY1666 entered into an agreement with Randall Holden of Warwick RI
to serve for three years with Mr. Holden promising to furnish meat, drink,
chlothes (double apparel), and all other necessities of life. By 1678, Hugh was a
freeman. On 10DEC1692, He and wife Abigail exchanged land with Job Greene, giving him
land deeded from father-in-law, Peter Busecot, deceased.

On 12MAR1704, he entered into an agreement with his son John, by which John was to have
his father's mansion house, orchard, meadow, etc., in Varwick: he paying his brother Hugh
Stone, Jr., 50 shillings(§) , brother George also, 50 shillings, and "if I or my wife or
both of us should by the Providence of God be disabled", etc., "or by old age or non
ability to get our living and sustenance, and if our said John shall do his utmost to see
and provide for us during time of our natural lives, sufficient maintenance, and behave
himself as a dutiful son ought to do to his parents, in all respects," etc. if John did
not fulfill this contract, deed was to be voided. As a matter of fact, this deed never
took effect; being revoked, and land sold nineteen years later, to another person(Barlo
Greene in 1723) preparatory to his move to Providence.

On 15OCT1706 he sold to son, John, for love and affection, two acres where John had set
his house in Warwick.

On 29JUI1723, he bought of Sarah Lawrence, widow, executrix of Villiam Lawrence,
deceased, for £265, a mansion house and farm where she dwelt, being bounded partly on the
South and partly on the East by the Pawtuxet River, and partly on the Sorth by land of
John Stone, 60 acres area. The reason for Hugh Stone's removal from Varwick in his old
age, to the North side of the Pawtuxet river, is readily found in the desire to be nearer
his children. The place of residence of his son Jahn(and probably Peter also) was at
Mashantatack, as it was then called (now within confines of Cranston): and here on the
North bank of the Pawtuxet, the father came to spend his last days.

On 24FEB1726, he sold his new homestead to his son John, for good will, etc., making an
agreement with him of same date. The following legacies were to be paid by John, after
death of Hugh and wife: To son Hugh, £20 and his gun. To grandsons, Peter & John, sons
of Peter, the fallowing legacies were to be paid by John: £20. To daughter Mary Ralph,
£40, 10§. To daughter Katherine Spicer, 40§. To daughter Abigail Vest, feather bed,
etc. To daughter Alice Flsk, 40§, warming pan, and iron kettle. To daughter Ann Utter
£3. To grandchildren Thomas Barnes and Ann Stone, 5§ each. To son John, remainder of
property. He described himself as a yeoman(class below English Gentry). A monument has
been erected to his memory in the old burying ground.

Josiah' s second Hannah b.cl718 but she supposedly died young. ]
