. . (10876) Villiam was a gunsmith in England. Around 1649, as one of the first white
settlers in the Stonington area of IJew London CT(he received large land grants), he
changed occupations to that of farmer/stock raiser.
He departed England in 1630 with Gov. Vinthrop's fleet & first settled in Boston, MA
where in MAY1631 he became a Freeman of the colony. In 1634, h.e was elected constable ini
Boston. Prior to 1640, he removed to Baintree, MA where he was elected a representative
ot the General Court of Massachusetts. Soon after, he removed to Rehoboth in Plymouth
Colony. At Sehoboth, he was arrested in an affray with, the Indian Vassamequine. ITot
happy with his treatment there, he removed to Vaquetequock Cove in New London County, CT
around 1649. The surrounding marshland provided abundant grasses for his livestock.
His enemies in Plyinouth Colony informed the Connecticut authorities that he planned to
engage in the sale of guns to the Indians. Connecticut authorities forced him to post a
£300 bond to assure he would not engage in such illegal trade.
At one time, he had been granted over th.ree thousand acres of land in New London
County. His house stood on tlie west side of Vequetequouck Cove, near the head of the tide-
water.
He served as Deputy to the Assembly at Hartford CT 1653-4-5-6. He also was a Selectmanij
of Stonington many years.
