John did not seem to move to Iowa till after 1860. Where he resided prior to this is a
mystery. By 1864, he was in Iowa & served with Iowa troops in the American Civil War as
his pension applications reveal (13 JA51880 Civil War Pension App# 353925, Cert# 412562):
..Drafted 50CT1864 & discharged on 21AUG1865.
..Pension application describes John Sr. as 5' 3-5", florid complexion, blue eyes, light
hair... claim based on catching rheumatism & bronchitis from wading cold river on march
from lashville, walking in rain 4 sleeping in mud & water 26DEC1864. Iowa Adjutant
General's report indicates that John Helm Sr. volunteered to serve as a substitute for
another (probably from Lucas Co. lA) who had been drafted 4 was willing to pay John.
..John did not catch up with regiment in time to take part in Sherman's march thru
Georgia in December 1864. However, he may may have participated in mopping up actions in
South Carolina & Forth Carolina till the conclusion of fighting. By way of Raleigh, IT.C.
& Richmond, Va. , the Thirteenth marched to Washington, D.C. where during the week of May
20, 1865, John's regiment marched thru the streets of the capital in a "magnificent
review". On June 7, the regiment was shipped via rail and steamer to Louisville, Ky.
where the regiment's men were mustered out.
The Thirteenth Regiment had enrolled 1788 men... 74 killed. ..313 wounded... 38 died of
wounds. .. 186 died of disease. .. 306 discharged for wounds, disease & other causes... 88
captured. .. 34 transferred. .. 185 buried in national cemeteries.
John BriiggeMinii (#038-4 ) , signed neighbor's affadavit to support John Helm's pension
application saying that he had known John Sr. since 1850 in Germany. .. cl900 pension was
$6. 00/mDnth. . . 8MAR1905 John Helm was admitted Marshalltown lA Soldier's Home... was
receiving $12/mo. pension. .. couldn' t read or write English. .. approx $120 paid John Jr.
upon father's death. .. hospital records indicate $62 in hospital bank. John died at
4:45AK 20FEB1912.
Helm Sr. , John (Continued) #018-C
..John Sr's: sponsors at his 1826 baptism were: Joh. Pulsf, Sophia Helm, Maria Wachtel.
His belated marraige to Caroline probably was in preparation for the trip to the U.S. to
join Joh. Christian Briiggemann who had departed Siilten the previous year with wife 4
son; Sophia 4 Johann Jr.
. .7IfOV1866, In a Deed of Sale, Johann Helm purchased from Hans 5. Miensen & Margaretha
Mien(r)sen, 80 acres of land in sec. 19&24 Volga Twp. in Clayton County, lA for $732.
Louis 8i Fredericke Arnold witnessed the deed.
. .285071876, In a Deed of Sale, John Helm conveyed to wife Caroline Helm for $2,000 the
above property plus 10 acres in Section Five probably in Read Twp. Sorth of
Motor (actually 13.9 acres in 1886 Plat Maps).
..1870 Volga Twp., Clayton Co. Census, John Sr.'s Real estate valued at $2,000 & Personal
Property at $700.
. . 1880 Census, Johann & son-in-law, Deidrich Brown, living nearby each other in Volga
Twp. Clayton County.
. . (019) Caroline indicated in the 1900 Census that she had had 7 children/6 living. 1886
Clayton Co., lA Land Plat maps show 39.86 acres registered in Caroline Helm's name: Sec.
19, Volga Twp. /Cox Creek Twp. line, I. of Littleport. Caroline's death was the result of
bowel cancer.
.. (018-2) Mina's death certificate indicated she died of pneumonia. Theador i Mina lived
in the Osborne area of Cox Creek Twp, , Clayton Co. In 1925 Census, Mina was living in
Elkader with daughter Carrie. Mina came to America with parents at age of two in company
of sister Jane. Theodore was a mason by trade 4 was in the State Hospital at
Independence, la. for seventeen months before his death 3MAY1906. He came from (Germany
in 1869. Theodore's funeral was in the Elkader Methodist Church & Mina's was in the
Elkader Evangelical Church. Mina was confirmed 5APR1868 at Zion Lutheran, Clayton Ctr. ,
Clayton County, la. Mina had been confined to bed from 295071932 till death on Sunday
12MAS1933 at 11:30PM.
. . (018-3) Seka, was living with daughter, Mary McCarthy, at 1506 Logan Ave. in Waterloo,
Iowa at time of death. She died of acute cardiac dilation & had been suffering for some
time from pernicious anemia. Her second marriage was witnessed by ¥m. Dryer & Caroline
Bredman. Villiam Preuss evidently changed the spelling of name to "Price". He died
around 1919. Archie McMillen died around 1928. Except for seven years in Oelwein,
Fayette County, Reka had lived in Buchanan County, & Clayton County, Iowa. At death, she
left a home in the Fargo section. Third Ward, Independence, Iowa. Funeral was at First
Presbyterian Church, Independence, la. , leaving 13 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren.
. . (018-4) Maria was survived by ten grandchildren & had been ill for a year 4 confined to
bed for a week prior to death. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church.
. . (018-5) Charles had lived in the Rowley area in the early 1900' s & seems to have never
married. In later years he had lived in Oelwein 4 finally died on the county farm at
Vest Union. He had been bedfast from diabetes for three weeks before death. His funeral
was conducted at the Rowley Methodist Church by the Baptist Minister from Oelwein.
.. (018-6) John Jr. 's family was marred by divorce, abandonment, adoption, etc. He was
married four times. Second wife, Mary Love, remarried a Joseph Center in Pennsylvania on
26DEC1909 with no children. Mary(Belle) died on 20OCT1955 4 is buried in the Quasqueton
lA Cemetery with Joseph Gender. Third wife, Katherine, died cl933 in Oelwein. Fourth
wife, Oma, may have been born a Gelman. In 1913, John Jr. was living in Varman,
Minnesota. On 10JU11945, he underwent an operation at University Hospitals for carsinoma
of the esophagus 4 died at 4:15PM on 25JU51945. He had been living in Oelwein, Fayette
County prior to hospitalization.
