. . (038) Johann Christian Briiggmann, wife, Sophia, 8t son, Johann Jr. sailed on 15SEP1855
from Hamburg, Germany aboard the bark ' Iford Amerika' under Capt. Peters & arrived in Hew
York City 230CT1855. The ship carried 133 adult passengers plus over 150 children.
According to family tradition, Johann died about six weeks after arrival in FYC of
homesickness. A clue to his parents 4 family is found in the Kargow 1819 Census in which
his first daughter, Maria Dorthea, is found in the custody of a Fritz Briigmann b.0ctl792
4 his wife Sophia b. 1797 both at Gr. DratowCnear Schlon North of Kargow) - a possible
brother.

. . (039) Sophia died on board the "Hord Amerika" at sea according to family tradition
although the Captain of the ship did not record such death but could be an omission. The
Kargow 1819 Census shows only one Schmidt family: Jakob b. 18SEP1757 Schwasdorf /Gr. Dratow
& his wife, Maria Preston b.28SEP1751 Schlon. A Sophia Schmidt, b.27AUG1801, is living
with them 4 may be a grandaughter & our #039.

. . <038-l) Karia Dorthea' s 1818 Lutheran baptismal record recorded her birth as
illegitimate 4 that father, Johann Christian Briiggmann was serving with the army at
Rostok. Johann evidently married Sophia Schmidt as soon as he returned from the army.
Maria Dorthea was separated from her mother, Sophia, & is found in the 1819 Kargow Census
living with Fritz Brugmann(b. 1792) & wife, Sophia Henf f in(b. 1797) probable uncle & aunt.
. . (038-2) Christina & husband, Ludwig Johann Ernst Bentschnieder of Pribbenow, may have
left for Horth America after marriage . There was an August Bent (d)schnieder living in
Volga Twp. in Clayton Co. lA near the Helms 4 Briiggmanns during the late 1800' s . Some
sources indicate she may have married a Dittner/Dittmer of Colesburg lA - no evidence.
. . (038-4) Johann Carl was not married to Vilhemine Helm at the 1852 birth of son,
Frederick, because the Stavenhagen Lutheran pastor marked the birth as illegitimate 4
gave Frederick the surname of 'Helm' for his mother which was the custom until
legitimized by marriage which he never did indicating that they may have been married in
the United States. He was released from the Army in Mecklenburg in 1855 (copy of release
on file). At Elkader, Iowa on 19JA51863, he renounced allegiance to the Duke of
Mecklenburg 4 swore allegiance to the United States 4 was granted citizenship. In a deed
dated 13MAR1865 he purchased from Micheal 4 Mary Kennedy for $1,375 land in Volga Twp. of
Clayton County, lA described as E i& SV i* Sec. 19 4 E V4 V i4 SV bounded by the
Elkader/Littleport road to form 40 acres more or less 4 SV 54 SE i4 E i* (excepting 10 acres
in SE comer owned by Micheal Maclemare) of Sec. 30 supposed to be 150 acres located
outside 4 to the North of present day Littleport. On 2JAI1871 John 4 Vilhelmiene
•Brugemann' (spelling on deed) sold this land for $1,300 to Frederic Peick. Since Vm. 4
Trace Bruggmann signed for brother Frederich's marriage application in 1904, it can be
assumed Johann Carl died sometime between his 1900 appearance in the census 4 1904 4 is
probably buried in the True Cemetery near Strawberry Point, Iowa in a grave containing at
least nine bodies with a marker reading 'Bruggmann'.

.. (038-5) Vilhealne, according to some sources may have married a 'Lowe' and lived in
Elkader I A area - no evidence to date.

. Brviggnann, Johann Christian (Continued) #038-C

.. (038-6) Dorthea's husband, Christian Theodosius Martin Lau (b. 101tAR1829 Pribbenaw) , was

the son of Daniel & Catherine 'Gutschow' Lau of Pribbenaw. They arrived in ITfC aboard

the "Hhein" on 22SEP1856 with Johann Helm(#018). He was a sponsor at Jane Helm' s(#018-l)

. . (038-7) Johann H. is mentioned in family tradition as having left Mecklenburg as AVOL

.. (040) John Sr. 's birthdate in his obituary is given as 1796, yet while living, he
indicated a date of around 1805. In his dad's estate records, John is listed as a minor
in 1822, thus I give him a birthdate of cl805. In 1851, John Sr. left Virginia with
other Hansel relatives from Pennslyvania. They floated down the Ohio River on flatboats
to the Mississippi & then probably took a riverboat up the Mississippi to Guttenberg in
Clayton County, Iowa. In a handwritten note of a Mrs. John Smith the Hansels "...had to
free their slaves when they left Virginia 4 floated down the Ohio River on a flatboat.
The slaves stood on bank crying & beggin to be taken along with the family,
family freed them because they couldn't take them into free territory."

A Varren Hansel told Sheila Tomkins in 1978 that John Hansel Sr. had brought two freed
slaves Kith him to Iowa & two additional names appear on John's tombstone beside wife's -
ex slaves?

Some sources indicate that John Sr. purchased 1000 acres of land in Clayton County
Plat records show that he retained 400 acres near Elkport in Section 7 of Mallory
Township. John donated some of this land for the Hansel Cemetery near Garber.

John's property was valued in Census records as:

-1850VA Real Estate..* 4,420 Personal Property..*
-1860IA Real Estate..* 1,600 Personal Property..* 450-
-1870IA Real Estate..* 4,000 Personal Property..* 900-

As Dunkards, the Hansels believed in baptism by complete immersion in water (perhaps up
to three times). In a Jennings family history, a baptism is described whereby seven men
and four women were baptized in Vayman Creek. - . . . the minister. .. stepped off the ice
into the water. The ice was about 22" thick and he baptized all in that ice
water. . .chlothes like stiff boards... not a cold..."

The same history mentions 'Love Feasts' in Hansel's feed barn with women on one side &
men on the other side of long tables. After Bible reading and prayer, a ceremony was
conducted of washing each others feet. They then broke bread and wine. After more

ZlntT !?wonH' ^°T' "? r.''^^^' ^^^^y°^^ ^d all the good beef soup and bread they
weanted. All good members met their brethren with a holy kiss. These 'Love Feasts' came
once a year and were a big event. The men wore whiskers and their hair lon^' the women
wore funny little bonnets with no ribbons, flowers, or jewelry.

John Sr. served as co-executor of 1830's John Eckhart's estate (#082) in Maryland 4
split a $1248.53 fee v/ith brother-in-law, Adam Eckhart. With his wife's SI, 800
inheritance 4 the proceeds from his own land sales he moved to Greene County,
Pennsylvania around 1840 & was living near his brother Jacob. Later, he moved to nearby
Monongalia County, Virginia (V. V. ) .

.. (041) lary Eckhart's nephew, John S. Bevans, moved to Iowa 4 lived near John & Mary
Hansel till his death in 1861 (see #082).

.. <040-l) Harriet seems to have been Andrew Lewis's third wife, whom she married sometime
prior to 1870. Harriet appears in 1850VA & 1856IA Census with parents 4 in 1870-80
Clayton Co. lA Census's with husband, Andrew, but her location or marital status between
1850-70 are unknown. Andrew Lewis came to Iowa cl850 & by first wife Jacqueline (b. 1818VA
d. 1857IA) had: Harvey (Henry) b. 18410H, Aaron Vance b. 18420H d. 1896IA, Alphius b. 18440H,
Angeline b. 26FEB18460H m John Schwighert, Lucy b. 18490H d. 1860IA, Andrew b. 1850IA,
Lucenda b. 1854IA, Alcinda b. 1856IA. Andrew's second wife seems to have been Mary ? as
indicated in 1360 lA Census although I suspect that she is the one and same Harriet Hansel
who's baptismal name was probably 'Mary' after her mother.

.. (040-6) George had suffered for 15 years from bright' s disease. He died while visiting
Guttenberg on business. His wife & son, George, were summoned by telephone & were at his
bedside in the Commercial house in Guttenberg prior to his death a at 11:30 PM Friday
141IOV1908. In his obituary, he was described as a well-to-do farmer in the Garber area
of Clayton County.

. . (040-7) Strother Todd was a minister with the Church of the Brethren (Dunkards) 4
ministered to many of the families in the area. Wife, Sophrona, taught Strother to read
a write a study the bible.

.. (040-8-) Sarah Hansel Milne was stricken with appolexy at 4:30AM (7FEB1928) i died at
2: 15 that afternoon, only a few hours after the death of her husband, Duncan, who had
died at 12:15AM that morning. Duncan & Sarah(Sis) had resided on a farm 4 miles east of
