There were no deaths from malaria among residents.

RECEIPTS AND SALES OF MATERIAL AND SUPPLIES.

The value of material ordered on United States requisitions for which invoices
were received on the Isthmus during the month totaled $489,347.09, of which
$440,194.57 was for the Department of Operation and Maintenance and $49,152.52
for other Panama Canal departments.

Cash sales on the Isthmus from stock, fuel oil, scrap, and obsolete and second-hand
material amounted to $52,846.32.

Price of Coal at the Canal.

Coal is obtainable from the plants operated by The Panama Canal at the prices
shown below, effective June 15, 1928:

"^C'lt^'- Balboa.

1. For steamships, including warships of all nations, delivered

from coaling plants, per ton of 2,240 pounds, except as pro-
vided in paragraph 2 $8.00 $11 .00

2. For vessels transiting the Canal that are directed by The Pan-

ama Canal to take coal at Balboa on account of the con-
dition of the plants, the quantity available, or for the pur-
pose of expediting traffic

3. For steamships, including warships of all nations, when de-

delivered from lighters in quantities of 50 tons or more, per
ton of 2,240 pounds

4. For steamships, including warships of all nations, when deliver-

ed from lighters in quantites of less than 50 tons, with mini-
mum charge for 20 tons and with maximum charge not to
exceed that for 50 tons at prices specified in paragraph 3,
per ton of 2,240 pounds 11.00 14.00

Panama Canal Traffic During Calendar Year 1929, Segregated by
Nationality of Vessels.

Vessels of 24 nationalities made up the commercial traffic through
the Panama Canal during the calendar year 1929. Forty-four and
five-tenths per cent of the total commercial transits were vessels of
the United States, 25,9 per cent were British, and the remaining were
distributed among 22 nationalities. In the order of number of
transits, the 10 leading nationalities were United States, British,
■German, Norwegian, Japanese, Dutch, Swedish, French, Colombian,
