THE PANAMA CANAL RECORD

April S, J 953

Wheat Shipments.

An article dealing with the heavy wheat shipments passing through
the Canal from the Pacific to the Atlantic during November, 1932,
and presenting a short resume of shipments of this product during the
previous months of the past year and the average tonnage per month
for the preceding four years, was published in The Panama Canal
Record of December 28, 1932 (Vol. XXVI, No. 22).

As pointed out in the article, shipments in November, 1932, aggre-
gated 253,246 tons, and constituted the highest tonnage for wheat
from the Pacific to the Atlantic since February, 1929. During Decem-
ber, 1932, shipments continued to rise, a total of 337,021 tons having
been passed through during that month. Shipments in December,
1932, were the highest since February, 1928, when 432,690 tons were
passed through. In January and February, shipments fell off, the
tonnages in those months having been 262,339 and 211,626, respec-
tively. This indicates the tapering off of a heavy seasonal movement.
In both of these months, however, wheat shipments were greater than
in the corresponding months in 1932.

Approximately 97 percent of the recent movement of wheat through
the Canal in the current fiscal year has been shipments from Canada
to Europe. The following is a comparison of the wheat shipments from
Canada passing through the Canal during the first 8 months of the
fiscal year 1932, and the fiscal year 1933:

Transit of the "Empress of Britain."

The steamship Empress of Britain, of the Canadian Pacific Railway,
Ltd., arrived at Balboa on the evening of April 3, 1933, on the final
leg of a world cruise east-bound, begun last December from New York.
The vessel remained in port until the morning of April 5, on which
date she transited the Canal and sailed for New York, via Habana.
This is the second transit of the Panama Canal by the Empress of
Britain, the first having been made on April 1, 1932, on a similar
voyage.

The Empress of Britain is 733 feet 3 inches in length by 97 feet 8
inches beam, and of 42,348 gross tons. Tolls, limited to $1.25 times
the United States net tonnage, 15,188 tons, amounted to $18,985.
In beam, tonnage, and tolls, the Empress of Britain exceeds any other
commercial ship which has passed through the Panama Canal to date.
Based on gross tonnage, she is reputed to be the twelfth largest liner
afloat.

Ships' Chandlery Supplies.
Panama Canal Storehouses carry a complete line of ships' chandlery supplies,
available for sale to ships at C. I. F. cost plus 25 per cent surcharge which covers
local freight, handling, and other costs.

Publication of Notices and Circulars of Interest to Shipping.

All of the Panama Canal notices to mariners, notices to steamship lines, and general circulars of
interest to shipping in its relation to the Canal are published in The Panama Canal Record. For
this reason it is considered unnecessary to make a separate general distribution away from the Isthmus
of such notices and circulars to those receiving The Panama Canal Record. Shipping interests
ue advised to look for them in this paper, which is supplied to them without charge.
