L. Spynie and the sea on R. Lossie, was part of
Spynie, which in 13th cent, was an arm of the sea.

stratum of lias and building stone. Some of
the downs are still open, but the greater part is
enclosed with stone walls. There is little wood-
land ; corn, turnips, sanfoin, etc. are raised ; and
the large coarse-woolled sheep are the chief stock.
Estates are large, and seats numerous ; farms,
from 200 to 1000 acres, on 7 to 21 yrs. lease. The
Thames and Severn canal and Swindon Junct.
