I mwft not retard the work, nor your expeditions any loncer
with larger prefacing to it, oncly fomewhat iKight have bin laid
about the rules for interpretation of fcripturql u ill fay no more

frame of heart is neceflary,a heart holy and heavt nly, fiitable to

could fet out the exellency of it, fo it may be faid of the Scrip-
tures fpiritualnes, nothing butalieart filled with Scripture fpi-
ritualncs can fet forth the excellencies of it : and bec3ufe the au-
thoritie of Scripture is dreadfuli^we delire the prayers of you all
to God for us that his fearc might fal upon our heart s,t hat feeing

not bring any (cripture to t hemaintenance of any erroneous con-
ceit of our own heads,nor any evil of our own hearts : This we

upon you likewife, that you may come to theic Exercifcs with

What frame of heart is a Scripture-frame ?

The holy Ghoft tells yoH, Ifny^ 66, i. God lookesathim
that trembleth at his word: come with hearts trembling at the
word of God ; come not to be Judges of the Law, but doer«
ofit.

You may j udge of your profiting in grace by the delight you
findc in Scripture, as ^intilian Xvas wont to fay of profiting
in eloquence, a man m?y know that/aies he, by the delight he 1

findes in reading Cieeroi much more may this be faid of the
Scriptures, it is a true (igne of profiting in Religion* to whom
the Scriptures are f weter then the honey ,and the honey- combe.

And now I (hall onely tell you what the worke is we have
to doe, and then we (hall fall upon it, and that is to open Scrip-
ture untoyou,not oaely diffictdtiefi,but to (hew unto you what
divinetruths are contained in thera> what may cometre(h, and
fpring up from the fountainc it felfe> to prefent them unto you
with adding fome quickneflc. This is our work^ not to enlarge
any thing with long Explication, Probation^or Application.

For the firu then, Who this Prophet was. I will tell you no
more of him then what you have in the firft verft, Hofea the fin
9fBeeri. HisnamefignifiethaSaviourj one that brings falva-
tion. It is the fame root that lojhna had his name from; and
many faving and favourie truths we (hall finde thi; Prophet
bringing to us.

He was the fonne of Beeri. This Beeri we doe not find who
he was in Scripture^ onely in that he is here named as the Fa-
ther of the Prophet in the entrance into this Propb^cie. Surely
it is fc^^n^r/if^r^/M to the Prophet, and from it we may note
thusmuchj

That fo fhould parents live and walk as it may bean honour
to their children to be called by their names^ that their children
may neitheir be afraid nor a(hamed to be named by them.

The Jews have a tradition that is generally received among
them,that whenioever a Prophets Father is named,that Father
waslikewife a Prophet as well as the Son.If that were ie,then
furely it is no difhonour for any man to be theSon of a Prophet.
