It's become my favorite chemistry book. I teach high school chemistry and have used many experiments as demonstrations for teaching "modern" chemistry. Many of these experiments are not in modern texts, and are noteworthy as instructive demonstrations.
The text is quite accurate. I haven't found a single error in the description of chemical and physical properties. When I doubted some of the experiments, I duplicated them and found that Steele's descriptions were accurate.
This is quite amazing for any textbook written over 140 years ago
