a strict Presbyterian ; with him the Sabbath ^vas held
sacred. He once mistook Sunday for Saturday, and set
his son Obadiall hauling wood ; his wife churned the
butter and pounded the salt. On being apprised of their
mistake bv a neio'hl;)or, he at once made his sou haul back
all the wood and place it where he found it. It has been
stated, on good authority, that he once had j)a])ers in his
possession which contained a genealogy of the Xewcoml)
family, l^rought to Cornwallis in 1760 by the first New-
comb settlers: the 2:enealooT extended back many o-en-
erations, was written in Scripture phraseology — "which
was the son of," etc. According to this genealogy the
family came from " the West of England." These papers
had been preserved at the old homestead of his father,
but when search was made foi- them a few years since,
it was found they had l)een destroyed l)y children as
waste paper ! Mr. X.'s g. grandf , Dea. John Xewcomb,*
who removed to Cornwallis 1760, was, at that date, about
