On 5 May 1889 a friend hr ought to me from Rome a photo-
graph of Cardinal Pitra, with the intelligence that he died about
two months before. By the favour of Canon Scott of Cambridge
I have received from the Lady Abbess of St Mary's Abbey, Stan-
brook, Worcester, a mortuary card, printed at Solesmes, which
gives the date of Cardinal PitraJs death as 9 Febr. My dedica-
tion was in print in November, and all that I have said of the
Cardinal was toritten, as 1 believe, while he was yet alive. It
is a satisfaction to me to know that I have not wilfully sinned
against the law DE MORTVIS NIL NISI BONVM. I will
only add, what Thomas Baker said of Bisfiop Fisher, if I believed
v:ords of mine could profit the dead, I imiild follow him on my
knees, with no conventional R. I. P.
