He was a farmer, living on his father's old farm. He was
educated at the Cortland Academy aud Cortland State Xor-
mal School. On Sept. ?, 13T2, he went to Colorado, for his
health, and engaged m ranching and cattle raising. In
March, 1878, he had regained his health and retur?itd to
Cortland, X. Y., and occupied the old farm. They were
members of. the Cortland, X. Y., Centenary 'M. E. Church.

His education was academic, he had entered Upper Iowa
University, but left it in 1861, to enlist as a volunteer mem-
ber of Company C in the 12th Iowa Infantry, in which he
served until the close of the war. Was mustered out as
Major, was in battles of Fort Uonelson, Shiloh, Corinth,
Yicksburg, Jackson, Xeshville, etc. He has been secretar}- of
the Shiloh Battlefield Commission since 1895. Has filled
the office of Deputy U. S. Piev. Collector, Eecorder of
Deeds, Postmaster of V>'aukon, Iowa, 1881 to 1SS9, Super-
visor of Census 2nd Dis. of Iowa in 1890. His church re-
lations were with the M. E. Church. Eemoved to Chicago.

descendants are given, they will follow immediately
after their maternal ancestor, and the generation of
these descendants will oe placed following the name in
brackets — thus when the Eeed daughter is of the fifth
generation, her sons and daughters will he of the sixth
and placed in brackets [6th Gen.] and so on until all
her descendants are given — when the record will return
to the next Eeed daug-hter in order.

Euth Reed, daughter of William and Avis (Deacon) Eeade.

m. Dec. 19, 1662, John Whitman (2nd), son of John
Whitman (1st).

Settled on a farm hy the side of a large pond which took

from him and still retains the name of Whitman Pond. She

died without issue. He then married as his second wnfe,

Abigail Hollis. and had five children. Was a soldier in the

King Philip's War, in Capt. Isaac Johnson's, and later in

Capt. John Jacob's Company.

Mary Reed, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Bicknell) Eeed.

m. Xov. 24, 1697, Capt. Enoch Lovell. He died May 20,
1746. He left a large estate. Capt. Enoch Lovell was a
son of James Lovell who was a son of Robert Lovell who
came over with Eev. Joseph Hull's Company in 1635. See
an extended and interesting account of Capt. Enoch Lovell
in Vol. 1, His. of "Weymouth, with a picture of his early
home which was still standing at that date (1881).

David Lovell (4th Gen.), son of Capt. Enoch and Mary (Eeed)

m. pub. Jan. 11, 1730, Mary Torrey, daughter of Joseph
and Elizabeth (Symmes) Torrey.

He was of a studious turn and of an opulent family, was
fitted for college, afterward graduated at Harvard with class
of 1725. After spending a few years in teaching and, tradi-
tion says, preaching, died leaving two children.

Solomon Lovell, b. June 1, 1733; m. 1st Jan. 19, 1758, Lydia

Holbrook; m. 2nd May, 1762, Hannah Pittey.

Solomon Lovell -went into the Crown Point Expedition as
Lieutenant, and afterward entered the Revolutionary Service
and rose to great distinction in the Military Service, attaining


the rank of Brig. GeneraL He was also distinguished in the
Civil Service, being appointed a Kepresentative to the General
