He was a farmer, living on his father's old farm. He was
educated at the Cortland Academy aud Cortland State Xor-
mal School. On Sept. ?, 13T2, he went to Colorado, for his
health, and engaged m ranching and cattle raising. In
March, 1878, he had regained his health and retur?itd to
Cortland, X. Y., and occupied the old farm. They were
members of. the Cortland, X. Y., Centenary 'M. E. Church.

His education was academic, he had entered Upper Iowa
University, but left it in 1861, to enlist as a volunteer mem-
ber of Company C in the 12th Iowa Infantry, in which he
served until the close of the war. Was mustered out as
Major, was in battles of Fort Uonelson, Shiloh, Corinth,
Yicksburg, Jackson, Xeshville, etc. He has been secretar}- of
the Shiloh Battlefield Commission since 1895. Has filled
the office of Deputy U. S. Piev. Collector, Eecorder of
Deeds, Postmaster of V>'aukon, Iowa, 1881 to 1SS9, Super-
visor of Census 2nd Dis. of Iowa in 1890. His church re-
lations were with the M. E. Church. Eemoved to Chicago.

from him and still retains the name of Whitman Pond. She
died without issue. He then married as his second wnfe,
Abigail Hollis. and had five children. Was a soldier in the
King Philip's War, in Capt. Isaac Johnson's, and later in
Capt. John Jacob's Company.

1746. He left a large estate. Capt. Enoch Lovell was a
son of James Lovell who was a son of Robert Lovell who
came over with Eev. Joseph Hull's Company in 1635. See

home which was still standing at that date (1881).

He was of a studious turn and of an opulent family, was
fitted for college, afterward graduated at Harvard with class
of 1725. After spending a few years in teaching and, tradi-
tion says, preaching, died leaving two children.

Civil Service, being appointed a Kepresentative to the General
