Combination Ranges
THREE SIZES
The Original and Best Combination Range
Ten times as many in use as all other makes combined. Over
four thousand in use in Chicago and vicinity. We guarantee the
M & D Combination Range to bake quicker and better and to save
from 25 to 50 per cent in fuel over any other range made.
The Gas Section of the M & D Combination Range has the
quickest baking oven in the world, with two separate burners.
After the oven is sufficiently heated by the two burners, one can
be turned off and the baking can be done by the one burner,
economically. We manufacture our Combination Range with or
without Ventilated Roll Curtain or Canopy. Either Section works
independently of the other, and they are perfect in their opera-
tions when used together.

CONFIDENCE
THE present and preceding generations have
bought pianos, organs, other musical in-
struments and "everything known in music"
from Lyon & Healy to the extent of fifty million
dollars. This has enabled Lyon & Healy to
build up what is much the largest business of the
kind in the world.
In buying dry goods, clothing, footwear, or
other everyday articles, you become a judge
almost an expert and you are pretty safe in de-
pending largely upon your own judgment. Not
so when it comes to purchasing a piano. Many
pianos are not worth anything like the price
asked for them, yet, being made expressly to sell,
the detection of their shortcomings is difficult to
the average purchaser, who buys but once in a
lifetime. . Hence, the absolute necessity of buying
from a house in which you can have the fullest
confidence. The record of our sales during an
unbroken business career of over forty years un-
der one and the same management is the ground
upon which we ask your confidence. :: ;: ;:

PREFACE.
771HE Fifteenth issue of the CHICAGO BLUE BOOK possesses some
1 features which we trust will entitle it to retain the high place in
public favor that has been accorded its predecessors. We desire
especially to thank our lady patrons for their cordial appreciation of
our efforts.
Neither time nor money has been spared to make this work as
complete and valuable as possible. The difficulty attending the com
piling of such a book can be easily appreciated ; and we therefore
trust that any omissions will be brought to our notice, that they may
be corrected in future. We keep the entire work standing in type, that
such corrections can be made promptly, and in this way we hope to
make the CHICAGO BLUE BOOK as nearly perfect as it is possible to
make such a volume.
While retaining all the old features, such as Calling Days in the Street
List, and Summer Residence^ in the Alphabetical List, we have added
very materially to our Miscellaneous Information, Club Lists, Churches,
etc. We shall always be pleased to receive any suggestions from our
lady patrons whereby we can enhance the value of this work to them,
or any information regarding Social or Literary Clubs and Associations
which we have not already incorporated in our volume.
We do not claim the BLUE BOOK is either a City Directory or
absolutely an Elite Directory; neither do we pretend to pass upon the
social or financial standing of the parties whose names are contained
therein. It is simply a compilation of about twenty-two thousand names
of the most prominent householders of Chicago and suburbs within a
radius of thirty miles, published in the most convenient form for refer-
ence by our lady patrons.
The title, " BLUE BOOK," is given the work because of its blue cover
It does not refer to blue blood, as many people suppose. Webster's
i5
16 PREFACE.
definition of Blue Book is as follows: "BLUE BOOK A parliamentary
publication, so called from its blue paper cover, such being commonly
used ; also, a book containing a list of fashionable addresses"
The data for this work have not been compiled from circulars or from
other Directories. Experienced men, particularly adapted for such work,
have been assigned to each locality, and the greatest care has been used
in selecting these names. In order to issue the bdok before the Holidays,
it is necessary for us to commence our annual canvass early in Septem-
ber. We would therefore deem it a great favor if those absent from
their homes after October 1st would send us each year the information
they wish inserted, in order that the work may possess that accuracy
and completeness we have taken so much pains to secure.
