riage of Thankful Fuller, though there may have been one.

fA piece of paper in the possession of Carrie Louisa (iardimi of Mid-
dletown, Conn., had the name of Noah. The paper contained many of the
names of Abijah's children. I have placed it here, but do not know that
it should be placed in the list of Brainerd names. I have found it no-
where else,

probably b. Dec. 23, 1710. and son of Jonathan and Eliza-
beth (Smith) Arnold. He graduated at Yale College in
1724, and studied theology and preached for a short time
as a candidate for settlement, but was not ordained and
finally became a farmer in East Haddam, Conn. He
afterwards removed to Haddam. Mr. Samuel Arnold d.
before Dec. 3, 1751. Mrs. Sarah (Brainerd) Arnold d.
about 1772.

widow of Nathaniel Eisley of East Hartford, Conn. He
was a farmer on Haddam Neck. Mr. Benjamih Brainerd

Brainerd married Mary Dickinson. The manuscript said he married Mary
Colt. I am unable to state which is right. In the history of Lyme, by Mr.
and Mrs. Salisbury, it is stated that a Colt married a Brainerd.

Middlese.'c; Coimty Book, p. 188. William, .James, Abijah, Josiah, Na-
than, and Benjamin Brainerd, Ebenezer Smith, Ebenezer Smith, Jr., Da-
vid Smith, were of the committee to petition the General Court for an act
of incorporation as a parish, and in 1740 their request was granted; and
the parish was incorporated liy the name of Middle Haddam.

ham, Middlesex Co., Couu.; m., Dec. 23, 1742, Elizabeth
Spencer, b. Feb. 4, 1716-17, dau. of Nathaniel Spencer.
He was a farmer in Chatham. He lived where the house
of Hamlin F. Johnson stands, which was built by Jedidiah
Brainerd, Jr. He served in at least one expedition to
Canada in the French and Indian War. Mr. Jedidiah
Brainerd died about Sept. IS, 1790, in Chatham, Conn.
Mrs. Elizabeth (Spencer) Brainerd died .

Haddam. He was a farmer. He was supposed to have
been in the Revolutionary War. Mr. Jonathan Brainerd
d. Jan., 1825, in his 88th yr. His will was probated Jan.
31. 1825. Her will was probated April 14, 1825. In it she
speaks of him as being deceased. Portland, Conn., Pro.
Eec.

from Ehode Island to Haddam. The Stewarts are of
Scotch and the Eichardsons of English descent. He was
Captain of militia and a soldier in the Eevolutionarj-
War. He was chosen Ensign of the 3d Co., 7th Eegt.,
Oct., 1770. He enlisted May 10, 1775, in 1st Co., 2d Eegt.,
General Spencers. He was in service 18 days as one of the
Lexington Alarm men, April. 1775. He was discharged
Oct, 25, 1775. He was a farmer in Haddam. Mr. Gid-
eon Brainerd died Dec. 25, 1801, in his 73d year. Mrs.
Sarah (Eichardson) Brainerd died Aug. 20, 1812. ae. 79
years.

beth (Cone) Smith of Haddam. He was one of a com-
mittee for the building of a new church in that place. He
was appointed Lieutenant of the 3d Co., 7th Eegt., in
1772, and Captain in March, 1775, continuing till Dec. 18,
1776, when he asked to be dismissed from service. He had
served in the militia more than 30 )'ears. He was Captain*
of the company which defended the Bridge, when Wash-
ington retreated from New York to White Plains, and then,
afterwards, cut down tht; Bridge. f He was elected deacon
of the Congregational church in 1784, continuing in the
office till his death. He was a farmer. Deacon Eliakim
Brainerd died Jan. 18, 181.5, in his 84th year. Mrs. Lucv
(Smith) Brainerd died May 28, 1821, ae." 83 years.

tablish Eliakim Brainerd to be Lieutenant of the 3d company or trainband
in the 7th regiment in this Colony."

(1772-1775.) Vol. XIV, p. 400. March. 1775: "This Assembly do es-
tablish Eliakim Brainerd to be Captain of the third company or trainband
in the seventh regiment in this Colony."

Vol. Ill, Fifth Series, American Archives, p. 1281, contains the follow-
ing letter:

" Captain Brainerd to Governor Trujibill.

" Haddam. 18 December, 1776.
■"Sir:

" I beg leave to inform your Honour that I have served in the Militia
for more than thirty years, and for some time past, as the Captain of the
third Company in the seventh Regiment in this State; that I am advanced
in age, being about 50 years old, and my health much impaired by a rheu-
matic disorder, which renders me very unfit for actual service. I therefore
humbly desire your Honour to send me by Doctor Brainerd, a dismission
from said office and orders to lead said company to a new choice, and hope
1 may be authorized to make return to the Assembly now sitting.
" I am your Honour's most humble servant

" Eliakim Brainerd.
" To his Honour, Governour Trumbull."

Middle.sex Co., Corm. ; m., Xov. 15, 1763, Nehemiah Brain-
erd, b. about 1741, in Haddam, sou of Rev. ISTeliemiah and
Elizabeth (Fiske) Brainerd of Eastbnry Society, in Glas-
tonbury, Conn. He graduated at Yale College in 1763.
He lived in Haddam. He held the office of justice of the
peace for Middlesex Co. from 1784 to 1800, inclusive, and
for Haddam from 1799 to 1807, inclusive, and town clerk
from 1785 to 1804, inclusive, and town treasurer from 1794
to 1806, inclusive, and member of the legislature in the
October sessions of 1777, "89, '90, '91, and of the May ses-
sions 1789, '91, '92. He was elected deacon of the Con-
gregational Chiarch about 1784, which office he held till
his death. He received the degi-ee of A.M. Deacon or
Captain Xehemiah Brainerd died Nov. 8, 1807, ae. 66
■ years. Mrs. Sarah (Brainerd) Brainerd died Sept. 26,
1819, in her 79th year.

then moved to iliddletown Upper Houses, now Cromwell.
Conn., and was a farmer in both places. He carried the
frame of his house with him from Haililain. roa'lv to set up

1809. in her 66th yr. . He m. (3), May 4."l812, Mrs.
Eoxanna Eash, in Eocky Hill, Conn., widow of Burrage
Eash. His first wife was Mehitable Knowles. by whom he
had four children. Captain Abner Smith died in Crom-
well.

a sailor. His home was in Haddam. Mrs. Eebekah (Brain-
erd) Smith died Aug. 5, 1818, in her 73d year. Mr. or
Ensign Jonathan Smitli died Xov. 4, 1834, ae. 88 years.
