(Arnold) Lewis. He was a soldier in the Eevolutionary
War; a Corporal for five years, under Washington, and
suffered very greatly at Valley Forge, in 1777, while with
the army. He was in the 8th Co., 6th Regt. of Conn. He
received a pension. Mrs. Mary (Brainerd) (Clark) Lewis
died Dec. 30, 1819, ae. 63 years. Mr. Augustus Lewis died
Feb. 14, 1833, ae. 83 years.

Brainerd d. Aug., 1850, ae. 79 or 80 yrs.

(Shaler) Smith of Haddam. Mrs. Elizabeth (Brain-
erd) Smith died Aug. 25, 1813, ae. 34 years. Captain John
Smith, Jr., m. (3), May 16, 1815, Cynthia (Tyler) Brain-
erd, daughter of Simon and Lucy (Church) Tyler and
widow of ChauBcey Brainerd. After his second marriage
he lived in Middletown Upper Houses, now Cromwell,
Conn. Three children by his second marriage. Mr. John
Smith, Jr., d. Aug. 27, 1839. Mrs. Cynthia (Tvler)
(Brainerd) Smith d. April 13 or 31, 1864.

Smith, b. Feb. 9, 1781, dau. of Stephen and Esther
(Church) Smith. He was Ensign in 1812 and 1813, and

received the title of Captain. He was a farmer in Had-
dam, Beaver Meadow district. Mrs. Lucy (Smith) Brain-
erd died Feb. 9, 1831, ae. 50 years. He m. (2), Sept. 19,
1831, Fanny Hazleton, b. May 1, 1793, daughter of Simon
H. and Jedidah (Smith) Hazleton of Haddam, Conn.
Captain Aaron Brainerd died Sept. 9, 1849, ae. 68 or 69
years. Mrs. Fanny (Hazleton) Brainerd died March 3 or
10, 1860, ae. 66 years.

Johnson, Jr., b. about 1748, son of John and ( )

Johnson of East Hampton, Conn., or of Caleb and Mary
(Cook) Johnson. Mrs. Lois (Brainerd) Johnson d. June
29, 1833. He m. (2), June 26, 1836, Mrs. Mary (Cole)
Bailey, dan. of Marcus and Phebe (Scoville) Cole and
widow of Solomon Bailey. He was a Kevolutionary
soldier. He served in Captain Silas Dunham's Co. He
and his wife drew a pension. The following lines
appeared in The Middletotvn Sentinel and Witness:

Old maids and widows now look up.
Put on a smiling face,

Although you've had a bitter cup,
There's hope still in your case.

They were quite advanced in life when married, their united
ages being 163 years. Mrs. Mary (Cole) (Bailey) John-
son d. March 23, 1857, ae. 95 years, 9 months. Mr. John
Johnson d. June 28, 1842, ae. 84 years by his gravestone ;
by church records and newspapers he was 94 years of age.

102. Othniel-= Bkainerd {Otliniel'^, Abijali^, James-, DanieV)

of Chatham or East Hampton, Middlesex Co., Conn.; ra.,
July 25, i;82, Grace Stocking, b. May 8, 1763, daughter
of Benjamin and Phebe (Washburn) Stocking of Portland,
Conn., formerly of Middle Haddam. He moved with his
family from East Hampton, town of Chatham, to Winches-
tor. Conn., in 1784, where he lived 11 years, on the road
to Torrington. He was selectman in 1789 and 1794. He
left Winchester in 1795; from thence to Paris, Oneida
Co., N. y., where he remained 19 years, and from thence
to Perryville, Madison Co., N. Y., where he died. He
pitched a staie as one of the committee for a meeting
house in Chatham. He served seven years in the War of
the Revolution and about two years before its close received
an orderly Sergeant's warrant. He enlisted Jan. 20, 1777,
for three years, and was discharged Jan. 20, 1780. Ser-
geant in i781. His honorable discharge, signed by Gen.
Washington, was in the hands of his child, Buckley Brain-
ord. He received a Sergeant's pension as a soldier from
Connecticut, while residing in New York. Mr. Othniel
Brainerd died May 27, 1832, in Madison, X. Y. She m.
(2), Dec. 1, 1785, Joseph Wilcox.* Mrs. Grace (Stock-
ing) (Brainerd) Wilcox died April 7, 1831.

Rev. Geo. Cotton), Uriah Skinner, b. , in Bolton,

Conn., son of Richard and Martha ( ) Skinner.

They lived in what is now Manchester, Conn., but which
was then called Orford, and from there moved to Clinton,
Oneida Co., N. Y. He afterward moved to Paris, N. Y.

* I have recorded facts as given me. No mention has been made of
divorce, though a second marriage was sent me.
