following is an obituary notice which appeared at that time:
" In the death of Mrs. Willey her friends and family have
sustained an irreparable loss. As a wife and mother it may
be truly said of her, she guided her affairs with much dis-
cretion. iSTor was her attention wholly inclined to the tem-
poral interests of those about her, but she was anxious to
l3ring up her family in the steps in which she had for many
years walked — the steps which lead to eternal happiness.
In the domestic circle slie was much valued. Brothers and
sisters participated in the happiness which her distinguished
virtues inspired; the children of her love found in her a
faithful instructor and friend, and the husband of her
youth every joy and the balm of every sorrow. The religion
which she professed was not an ideal fancy that dwelt upon
the exterior of the mind, and enjoyed the dismal ecstasies
of fanatical speculation. No, indeed ! it was the enlivening
and active faith of that Gospel which has brouirht life and
immortality to light. It w'as a deep and settled principle
of the heart, which sweetly mingled itself with the affec-
tions, incorporated itself with the disposition, and produced
a happy result to the entire character of the professor."

Willey d. . Hon. Calvin Willey d. Aug. 23, 1858,

ae. 81 yrs., 11 mos., 8 ds., in Stafford, Conn.

The following sketch was taken from The History of Tol-
land, written by Judge Waldo :

"Calvin Willey was admitted to the bar Feb., 1798, and
opened an office in Chatham, but in 1800 removed to Staf-
ford, where he was chosen to the Legislature, and was post-
master from 1806 to 1808, when he removed to Tolland
and was there postmaster from 1818 to 1825, and was six
times elected to the General Assembly and twice to the
State Senate. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Con-
gress in 1820, being defeated because he had, in 1819, al-
lowed his name on a imion ticket of Federalists and Demo-
crats for state senator, he being a Democrat. In 1821 he
was a candidate for U. S. Senate, but was defeated. In
1825 he was elected to that body and served six years, till
1831, when he returned to the practice of his profession, but
did not regain his former standing. In 1834 he returned
to Stafford. He was a man of more than ordinary in-
tellect, and his attainments as a lawyer were very fair. At
one time he stood at the head of the bar in Tolland County.
He always entered into the cause of his client with his
whole heart; indeed, he often became so identified with his
client as to make success a matter of personal feeling, and
he sometimes lost sight of the true interests of his client
in his zeal to defend the claims he set up. At the close of
his life the Ijar of Tolland County noticed his memory by
appropriate resolutions."
