and Sarah (Allen) Kenyon. He commanded a sloop
launch when 18 years of age, which carried passengers at
the time of the Erie Canal celebration at Sandy Hook at the
meeting of the waters from Lake Erie to the ocean. He
commanded a sailing vessel on the Hudson River, and then a
steamboat for many years. He was captain of the steamboat
South America, the handsomest boat of its day, the first to
have staterooms, the first to burn coal, having previously
burned pine wood. He made the shortest trip on record and
it stands so yet (1892). In 184-1, he moved to jSTew York
City, where he was a commission and forwarding mer-

He possessed many qualities of manhood that gave him the
respect and esteem of all with wlioni he eanio in contact.
The selfii5hness of human nature was in him Kss developed
than in the average of mankind. It was never his practice
to drive a close bargain or to barter for his undue gain.
He was notably willing to live and let live — to do unto
others as he would have them do unto him. He sought and
knew no other way than to perform his duties and to meet
his engagements promptly. He offended no one and lived
a quiet, useful life. Politically Mr. Brainerd was a life-
long Democrat, giving his unvarying support to the party
from Andrew Jackson's time to the present. His blame-
less life was well rounded out in fourscore years. His

He was always a vigorous man. He died suddenly at his
