Ann (Sindall) Burgan. Mr. Philip J. Burgan was one
of the old defenders of Baltimore in 1812 and 1814. His
wife was sick in bed during the bombardment of Fort
McHenrj', with no one but negro servants around her. She

could hear the caunou roar plainly, and some of the
British stole her turkey out of the yard. He was a gar-
dener and lived in Gardeuville, Baltimore Co.. Md. Mr.

Benjamin Arnold Brainerd died . She was a

devout member of the Protestant Episcopal (!hurch, was
a bright and well-read woman and a good mother. She
now resides (1891) with her son Frank, in Gardenville,

Weekes. He- served as 1st Lieutenant and Captain in the
army during the Civil War, going to Ship Island with
General Benjamin Butler in 1862. He was 2d Lieu-
tenant of Co. E, 13th Inf., mustered in Dec. 10, 1861,
promoted to Captain and served 2 yrs. and 6 mos. Mrs.
Brainerd was recording secretary- of the W. C. T. U.,
living at Denver, Col., and a woman noted for her eminent
Christian character, as well as zeal in temperance work
and other social reforms. She was loved by all who knew
her, and her sudden death brought grief to many hearts.
She was sister of Warren Weekes of West Farmington,
Me. She made her home in Farmington prior to and
during the Civil W^ar, and later in West Farmington,
Me. After the war Mr. Brainerd moved his family to New
Orleans, La. Mr. William Albion Brainerd d. June 17,
1881, in New Orleans. After his death his wife made her
home with her two sons. Mrs. Eoxanna Brooks (Weekes)
Brainerd d. Dec. 2, 1888. in Denver. Col.

he went to Ohio, studied medicine and was admitted
to practice before he was 21 years of age. He studied and
practiced his profession in Unionville, Ohio, and lived
there with the exception of about one year. He was a
man of rare attainments, and at his death was greatly
