England, dau. of Henry and Anne (Scrivener) Moidd of
Cleveland. Ohio, formerly of Chertsey, England, then of
London, England. He founded the music publishing
house in Cleveland, Ohio, called by his name, and estab-
lished a music store in 1836. In 1865 Charles S. and

Henry M. were admitted as partners, and the firm name
changed to S. B. & Sons. After Mr. Silas Brainard's
death the firm name was changed to S. Brainard's Sons.
In 1S8J: Henry M. sold his interest to Chas. S., who took
in as partner Mr. Ed. Graves, the firm name remaining
as before. In 1884 Henry M. opened the piano business
as H. M. B. & Co. In 1889 he purchased the entire Cleve-
land business of Chas. S. and Ed. Graves, and formed a
stock company called the H. M. Brainard Co., which is
the present business firm (1890). Chas. S. Brainard
moved to Chicago and formed a stock company under the
name of " S. Brainard's Sons Co.," where he is confining
his business to publishing and selling sheet music and

Abijah', James^, Daniel^) of Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co.,
Ohio; m., Dec. 14, 1854, Helen Ciishman Hills, b. June
19, 1804, in Cleveland, dau. of Nathan Cushman and
Sabrina Ann (Loomis) Hills of the same place. He went
to Cleveland with his parents in 1834. He received his
education in the Cleveland public schools, and then became
connected witli the music business, which had been estab-
lished there in 1836 by his brother, the late Silas Brainard.
Later he went to Louisville with his brother, George W.
Brainard, where they also established a music business.
In 1857 he returned to Cleveland and again connected him-
self with the business of his brother Silas. In 1877 he be-
