place. He was an agent for the Chester Eiver Steamboat
Co. till 1876. He was ( 1889 ) freight agent of the Maryland
Steamboat Co., of Baltimore, Md. He taught school, then
attended the Mercantile College, and when the Civil War
broke out, enlisted as a soldier and was in the army three
years, three months, five days. He was Captain under Gen.
Pope, and went to Kichmond ; was seven weeks a prisoner,
was paroled and went home for three months, and before
he was exchanged served again with Gen. Warren at
Weldon B. E. That Brigade — the Maryland — led the
advance. Though the time for which he enlisted had
expired on the morning of the engagement, yet it was three
months and three days before he left the army. He lived
in Baltimore, Md. Mr. Eufus Augustus Brainerd d.

He read law in the office of Hon. E. F. Webb, and was ad-
mitted to the bar in Kennebec Co., Me., Mch., 1886, com-
menced the practice of law at Fairfield, Somerset Co.,
Me., May, 1886, and continued there until Xov., 1890,
when he was appointed clerk of the Courts for Somerset Co.
by Gov. E. C. Burleigh, to fill the vacancy caused by the
resignation of Hon. L. H. Webb. He removed to Skowhe-
gan. Me., and commenced the duties of the office on Dec. 4,
1890. His term of office, being the unexpired part of Mr.
Webb's term, expired Dec. 31, 1892. The candidate elected
at the coming September election will hold ofBce for four
