Iowa. The greater part of his youth was spent in Traer,
Iowa, where he attended the public schools and Kileford
Academy of that place.

After leaving school he taught two winters and one summer,
then entered the law office of J. M. St. John at Cedar
Eapids, where he pursued the study of law, particularly
as related to patent cases. He also became an expert
draughtsman. After two years he formed a partnership
with Mr. St. John in the patent soliciting business, which
was dissolved after two and one-half years. During his
stay in Cedar Eapids he was for a time actively interested
in the St. John Manufacturing Co., a firm engaged in
the manufacture of a line of office specialties. He was
business manager of the concern. After moving to
Chicago, 111., Sept., 1891, he was manager of the Chicago
Bicycle Co., but soon returned to the practice of his pro-
fession. In 1893 he was engaged in a general patent
soliciting business in Chicago. He was of the firm of
S. "W. Brainerd & Co., engravers and designers, Cedar
Eapids, Iowa.

He served in Co. C, 1st Eegt., la. National Guards, receiving
an honorable discharge. Mr. Sydney Wellman Brainard

of Jahner Dickinson of Haddam. He learned the
ship carpenter's trade of his father, and became master
builder of two revenue cutters built in Ohio for the United
States Government in 1856. He moved to Somonauk,
De Kalb Co., Ill, and stayed there three years, and re-
turned to Haddam and worked at his trade until 1866.
He then moved to Stony Creek, Conn., and built the
Brainerd House, of which he was proprietor. In 1891
he had returned to Haddam, Conn., living on the farm

New York City, and was well known in the profession.
His argument in the Eapid Transit cases was published
and favorably commented on. He was a member of the
Young Men's Christian Association, and at the time of
his death was manager of its Twenty-third Street branch,
and a member of the International Committee. He was
Secretary of the Alumni Association of the University of
New York. He took gi-eat interest in public affairs and
was a member of the Kepublican Club of the City of New
York, of the New York Bar Association, the Congrega-
tional Club, and the Society of Colonial Wars. Mr.
