4:2 Brainerd-Brainard Genealogy.

of Hadlyme parish by Joshua Brainerd and Isaac Spencer,
town committee, near or joining Joseph Dunning's house
lot, iu the west side of said lot, near the upper end.
Milling-ton was settled about 1704 at which time Joshua
Brainerd moved there. Sergt. Joshua was appointed En-
sign in May, 1706. Mrs. Mehitable j. ch., Feb. 23, 1717,
or '18, as the wife of Ensign Joshua Brainerd. He was
town assessor in 1697. Capt. Joshua Brainerd d. May
13, 1755, in his 83d vr. In The New London Gazette of
Feb. 12, 1773, is found the following,: "On the 33th.
ult., at East Haddam, Mrs. Mehitable Brainerd, widow
of Capt. Joshua Brainerd in thj- 87th. year of her age,
very suddenly, taken with a severe pain in her head which
went all over her body, when the pain left her, in which
condition she remained about an hour when slie expired."
Her death is thus recorded by Judah Cone, who married
her gi-anddaughter. " In Feb. 1773, died Mehitable
Brainerd, grand-mother, in the 84th year of her age.

29, 1728, dau. of Einathan and Thankful (Nettleton)
Hiird, of the same place, and widow of Judah Gates, who
d. June 24, 1767. He was a farmer in East Had-

Spencer of East Haddam. He moved to Rumney, N. H.,
with an invalid wife. He was a farmer. Land was
granted him Mch. 18, 1767, in that place. He was justice
of the peace and selectman, Oct. 3, 1781. Mrs. Esther
(Spencer) Brainerd d. probably about 1780. He m. (2),
Susannah ( ) Cotton, of Sanderson, N. H., widow

of Eev. Mr. Cotton. They were published Nov. 1, 1783.
He was living in Stewartstown, N. H., in 1798. Mr.

yr. He was Ensign of East Haddam, South Co., Oct. 8,
1741. In May he resigned his commission and returned
home. He was deacon in the Cong. ch. in Westchester,
from 1775. He m. (2), Nov. 23, 1791, Sarah (Brainerd)



* The manuscript said that Eleazer Brainerd had five or six children,
but I have found only these three names.

Rev. D. D. Field said in some of his notes that Eleazer was the father
of Dudley, who died, and of Oliver, who lived in South Glastonbury, Conn.,
and was postmaster there, but I have found no proof that they were the
children of Eleazer Brainerd.

Haddam, Middlesex Co., Conn.; m., Aug. 26, 1762, Su-
sannah Chapman, b. Oct. 10, 1742, only child of Francis
and Susannah (Rowley) Chapman, of East Haddam.
He was Lieutenant in Col. T. Cooke's Regt. ; prisoner
from Mch. 15, '77, to Jan. 3, '81, on L. I., and paid
wages in May, '78. He was in Col. Canfield's Militia
Regt. at West Point, Sept., 1781. In Col. Spencers
Regt., he was 2d Lieut. He was a farmer in East Had-
dam. She was confirmed in St. Stephens ch., Oct. 4,
1791.* Mr. Joshua Brainerd d. Jan. 22, 1811. in his 73d
year. Mrs. Susannah (Chapman) Brainerd d. Mch. 19,
1824, ae. 82 yrs. Both are buried in the Warner burying
ground in E. Haddam, near Hadlyme, Conn. "

dah Osborne, b. Jan. l(i, 1742 ur 1743, in East Haddam,
dau. of Dr. John and Anna (Doane) Osborne, of Middle-
town, Conn. She was confirmed in St. Stephens church,
Oct. 4, 1791. He was a vestrjTnan in the Episcopal
church. He was one of the number whose names were pre-
sented for its formation, and was on the committee for
building the church. Lieut. Amasa Brainerd d. ISTov. 26,
1815, in his 74th yr. Mrs. Jedidah (Osborne) Brainerd
d. Dec. 7 or 17, 1819, in her 77th jt.

* The Episcopal Society was formed Apr. 27, 1791, in consequence of
a division among the people of the First Congregational Society, respecting
the location of their meeting house. Among the early founders of the
Episcopal Society, were Joshua, Amasa, David, John, and Chevers Brain-
erd. The church was not completed till Oct. 16, 1795.

1798. His tombstone gives the following melancholy inci-
dent, " Sacred to the memory of Amasa Brainerd, Jun. son
of Lieut. Amasa and Jedidah Brainerd, who received a
mortal wound on his head by the falling of a weight from
the bell, on Sunday the 22nd of April, 1798, as he was
about to enter the church to attend on Divine worship, who
departed this life Apr. 27th, in ye twentieth year of his
age." The weight spoken of was attached to the bell to
cause it to swing true. The occurrence produced a deep
sensation, and the bell was rung no more for years.

East Haddam, b. Jan. 22, 1744, son of Samuel and Jeru-
sha (Brainerd) Spencer, of Millington. He lived in
Millington parish, East Haddam. Mrs. Huldah (Brain-
erd) Spencer d. Jan. 23, 1783, in her 38th year. He m.
(2), June 24, 1783, Man- Fuller, f b. Sept. 27, 1760, dau.
Lieut. Thomas Fuller and his second wife, Mary (Green)
Hosmer, widow of Eobert Hosmer. Mrs. Mary (Fuller)
Spencer d. Aug. 7, 1808, ae. 86 yrs. He m. (3), Mch. 3,
1792, Lois or Avis (Hosmer) Hyde, of Lebanon, Conn.,

dam, Middlesex Co., Conn.; m., June 5, 1783, Rachel
Smith, b. Dee. 26, 1755, dau. of Joseph and Mary (Ful-
ler) Smith, of East Haddam. He moved to West
Stephentown, X_ y., about the year 1794:. He was a
farmer and settled on the mountain, cleared up the land,
and remained there during life. The mountain has since
been called Brainerd mountain. Mr. David Brainerd d.
May 26, 1813, in his 63d year, in West Stephentown.
Mrs. Rachel (Smith) Brainerd d. Feb. 2, 1838, ae. 73 yrs.,
at the same place.

peace from 1807 to 1833, inclusive, selectman and repre-
sentative to the General Assembly, May, 1767, and May
and Oct., 1807. He was Quartermaster in the 31st Regt.,
1st Brigade, Lieut. Col. Eliphalet Bulkeley, in 1785, '80,
'89, '90, '91, '93. His name was presented with others
for the formation of the Episcopal Church in E. Had-
dam. Mr. John Brainerd d. Dec. 1, 1834, in his 72d yr.,
in East Haddam. Mrs. Anne (Smitli) Brainerd d. Jan.
4, 1835, in her 82d yr., in the same place.

18. Daniel* Brainerd* {DanieP, Joshua^, DanieV-) tf Rum-

ney, Grafton Co., N. H. ; m., Jan. 22, 1777, Esther Blod-
gett, of Rumney. He had a grant of land in that
place, Meh., 1767. He was called yeoman. He was
published Dec, 1776. The town of Stewartstown, N. H.,
was incorporated Dec. 24, 1799, and he and his brother
Barzillai signed the petition for the same.

One report said he was a farmer in Winhall, Vt., and
came there from Connecticut, about or soon after 1780.
"Winhall was first settled in 1778, and he was among its
first settlers.

Mrs. Daniel Brainerd gave a deed in 1790, and called
herself a resident of Bath. The land sold was in Rum-
ney, N. H. He was selectman Meh. 20 and Sept. 10,
