Anna (Whitney) Seymour of New Canaan, formerly
Norwalk, Conn. After 40 years of active busineso life
as a wholesale grocer, cor. of Front St. and Btirlin^ Slip,
N. Y. City, he retired in 1831, and moved his family and
gojds by canal to Skaneateles, N. Y., in 1832, the memor-
able year of the cholera in New York City. The Journey
occupied ten days. He settled on the eastern bank of
Skaneateles Lake, on his farm and country seat of 100
acres of fertile land, it was his paradise, for " He could
not see the smoke of the city of New York," he had fled
from its stirring scenes to his earthly haven of rest and
contentment, but continuing his activity, until called
away from his bower of beauty and sweetness. The per-
fume of the locust blossom, the fragrance and beauty of
the apple trees, and the sweetly blushing roses, were cele-
brating the anniversary of liis 38 wedded years, and his
75th birthday, when he was called away. He retired for
the night in "full possession of all his faculties, and after
a peaceful night's rest, his lamp of life went out without
a struggle, at seven o'clock in the morning. He resided
for seventeen years in St. James' parish, and during nearly
this entire period had been a member of the Vestry. The
interest which he manifested in the welfare of that part
of Christ's Church in which his name was finally enrolled,
and the liberality with which he contributed to the
calls of charity, led to his being regarded one of the read-
iest to dispense the good gifts of a beneficent providence.
In his earliest years the departed was received into the
Eedeemer's family through the door of holy baptism;
but a sense of personal luiworthiness doubtless deterred
him too strongly from partaking of all the blessed ordi-
nances of redeeming love. As the last bodily infirmity
increased within him, he unobtrusively exhibited a con-
sciousness of his probation being nearly finished, and con-
viction of the importance of preparation for the event-
ful home, by a great engagedness in the service of the
church. The writer of this brief notice remembers with
melancholy pleasure frequent instances of tearful sensi-
bility with which the deceased listened to the message of
Grod's love to sinners. His soul passed away from earth
on the morning of St. John the Baptist's day. One of the
greatest duties especially set forth in the Collect for that
festival receives a solemn enforcement from this afflictive
providence — the duty of making " a true repentance "
of making it " now," " before the night cometh wherein
no work can be done."

At a special meeting of the rector, wardens, and vestry
of the St. James' parish, Skaneateles, held in the Vestry

N. H., Lucy Beecher, of Colebrook, N. H., b. Apr. 27,
1798, in Bristol, Conn., dau. of Nathan Beecher. He was
a farmer in Stewartstown, N. H. She was a woman of rare
qualities and ever ready to help those in need. She was a
kind and affectionate mother, and brought up her children
to work and be useful. She was a woman of great physi-
cal sti-ength and powers of endurance, and during her life
did verj' much hard work. From the date of her marriage
to the time of her decease she lived on the same farm.
When her husband died it was his desire that he might
be laid out in a white robe, and that a Methodist minister
might attend his funeral. She made the same request,
which was granted her. Her life speaks to us all, espec-
ially to tlie young. Take care of the body, husband your
strength, walk uprightly before God and man. She now
rests from her labors, but her works, like rich perfume,
spread fragrance to all around. Mr. Barzillai Brainerd

* In history of Eye, it said David Locke was son of Elisha and Try-
phena (Moulton) Locke, and he d. in 1832.
