in Fair Haven, Vt., Oliver Cady, b. Sept. 20, 1781, in
reading, Vt., son of John Cady, b. in Killingly, Conn.,
Dec. 9, 1736, and d. in Westport, N. Y.. Feb. 1824. Mr.
Cady took the freeman's oath in Fair Haven, Vt., Sept.
1803. He was leader of the choir of the Congregational
society in 1804. He and his wife were very fond of
music, which talent descended to their children. They
resided in Orwell, Vt., in 1813, and about that time he
went as a drum major with a company that started to
join the American Army at Plattsburgh, N. Y., but
was too late to take part in the battle. From Orwell
they moved to West Kntland, Vt., in 1815, and from
there to Westport, N. y., in the fall of 1819. She was a
woman of great energy and executive talent, active and
cheerful to the time of her death. Mr. Cady was a
thoroughly honest and upright man but in the last years
of his life he suffered from poor health. His youngest
son worked out on a farm at $10.00 per month to help
his widowed mother pay the indebtedness on the farm.

Pew, of Poughkeepsie, N. Y. He was brought up as a
merchant and pursued that calling until he engaged in real
estate. He had accumulated houses and stores and lands
in Corning, N. Y., when a spark from a locomotive set
fire to the town, which destroyed his property. He then
returned to N. Y., and entered the emploj-ment of Alex-
ander T. Stewart, and took charge of the books. In 1849,
he left his employ and opened a real estate broker's office,
at Wall St. Ferry, Brooklyn. In 1860, he opened an office
in N. Y. at the Metropolitan Bank, comer of Broadway
and Pine St. In 1856, he was appointed by Gov. Morgan
to the office of notary public and held the office until May
21, 1888. He still continued his real estate business. The
anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge at the upper end of
Franklin Square, N. Y., marks the spot where he was
bom. He was an insurance agent in the same office he
occupied as a bookkeeper for A. T. Stewart. It has been
said he looked like Abraham Lincoln, but be that as it
may he is and always was a favorite of his, and he loved
the same poem that he loved, " Oh why should the spirit
of mortal be proud," etc. He was living in Brooklyn, N.
