nent business man in the City of Hartford for a long
period, and has won a lasting place in the history of in-
dustrial, mercantile and financial interests here. In his
early life he was associated with his father as an exten-
sive importer of tin plate, and conducted a large and
prosperous trade under the firm name of Charles Brain-
erd and Son. In 1849 he was united with a number of
gentlemen in this city m organizing the State Bank, and
was one of the original directors. He remained in the
board until October, 1852. At the annual meeting in
October, 1865, he resmned his active connection with the
bank and was chosen a member of the board of directors
and president. This position was occupied by him un-
interruptedly during life. His church associations were
with St, John's Episcopal Church, where he was long a
regular attendant. He was not an active participant in
political afl'airs, but through his life his sympathies and
affiliations were with the old Whig and Republican
Parties. He was an exceptionally well-informed man and
one of the interesting features of his mental equipment
was the thorough knowledge whieli he had of the great
centers of population both in this country and in Europe.
