A LIBRAE

INTRODUCTION.

^HE maps comprised in this Atlas were first pub-
-*- lished in Thalheimer's Manuals of History.
While still serving their original purpose in connec-
tion with those books, we have been led to believe
that they may be useful in the form of a hand-atlas
for reference.

The necessity of full, clear, and accurate maps in all
historical publications has long been fully recognized
by the reading public ; yet most of the histories in
our libraries are utterly deficient in this particular.

In Germany this deficiency has been remedied by
the publication of Spruner's gigantic Historical Atlas,
and of numerous other smaller atlases of the same
character but less expensive.

For the English reader, no atlas rivaling Spruner's

has ever been published, and our smaller historical

atlases have been at the same time costly and in-
adequate.

While it is not claimed that this Atlas will supply
the want of a full historical atlas on the grand scale
of Spruner's, the reception given to the maps in their
original form has persuaded us that they may have a
more extended usefulness in their present form.
