INTRODUCTORY.

The Fitchl:)urg Historical Society- presents herewith
the third ])rinte(l volume of the Old Records of the Town
of Fitchburg. The volume consists mainly of vital sta-
tistics of the town from 179G to near the middle of the
present century, and will be found equally interesting and
valuable as preceding volumes.

The work has lieen carried on under the watchful care
of City Clerk Walter A. Davis, the printing executed by
the Sentinel Printing Company, from copy prepared by
Miss Bessie J. Davis, while the index has been prepared
by Mr. Frank C. Hoyt.

The same general method with reference to paging
has been adopted in this as in previous volumes, the
heavy figures in l)rackcts representing the paging of the
original books.

Two portraits acc()m])any this volume — one of Dr.
Peter S. Snow, who was town clerk from 1825 to 1829,
the other of Dr. Jonas A. Marsh.all, who served in the
same capacity from 1829 to 1853 — the former having

l)con furnished by Mr. J. C. Moulton, and the latter hav-
ing been obtained through the eourtesy of Mr. Thomas
C. Caldwell of Dorchester.

Many reeords of intention of marriage appear in this
volutne, in cases to which but one of the parties resided
in town, and for which there were no corresponding rec-
ords of marriage. By correspondence with clerks of other
tov\'ns and cities, the compiler has obtained some of these
missing marriage records, which are given in an appendix.
