Wetherbee, Joseph, Harvard. Petition addressed to the Council, dated Aug. 2,
1777, signed by said "Wetherhee, of Harvard, stating that he had been drafted
to join the army raised to meet the enemy from Ticonderoga, notwithstanding
the fact that he was fifty-two years of age and partially disabled by rheuma-
tism so that he was unable to march long distances, and requesting a special
consideration of his case by reason of the following facts; that two of his sons
had served under him in the 8 months campaign at Cambridge [in 1775], while
another son had enlisted in the same year to serve for 8 months at Ticonderoga
and lost his life there, and that the petitioner had never received any portion
of his son's wages, nor any compensation for his clothes or arms which had
been lost ; that he had hired a soldier to serve for the term of 8 months in the
Continental Army at Ticonderoga in 1776 ; that in May, 1777, he had paid a
fine of £10 in lieu of service upon an 8 months draft ; that in addition his sons
had served at Dorchester for 1 year, so that he estimates the total amount of
service for which he had been held personally responsible since the alarm at
Concord to have been 52 mos. ; that he was in the continual exercise of his
emplojinent in making and repairing firearms for the public service and for
individuals ; that while he was ready to serve at any time upon alarms, he
believed it would serve the public better to permit him to continue at home
in his employment than to compel him to comply with the draft first men-
tioned ; also, council order dated Aug. 4, 1777, upon the representation of said
"Wetherbee, gunsmith, that he had been drafted as one of the one-sixth part
of the militia called out to reinforce Col. "Warner at or near Manchester by
order of the Council but that it would be to the public damage to have him
discontinue his occupation, directing that the said Wetherbee be discharged
from the draft until further orders from the Cotmcil and also from any further
service to which he might be liable in consequence of being detached as afore-
said.
