"Ward, Richard. Captain, 3dco., 1st Essex Co. regt. of Mass. militia ; return dated
Salem, May 15, 1776, signed by Col. Timothy Pickering, Jr., and Joseph
Sprague, of officers chosen by the several companies of militia in Salem and
returned to be commissioned, said officers accepting the appointments, how-
ever, only upon the condition that the General Court wovild compel a more
equal distribution as to the persons required to undergo military training and
to be subject to service calls, and also in order that the existing companies
might be kept fully trained and equipped ; ordered in Council June 6, 1776,
that said officers be commissioned ; reported commissioned June 6, 1776 ; also,
communication addressed to the Council, dated Salem, April 25, 1778, signed
by said Ward, stating that he had been appointed and commissioned Captain
of 3d CO., Col. Timothy Pickering, Jr.'s (l.st Essex Co.) regt., in 1776, at which
time he was the seventh officer in the regiment by seniority ; that owing to the
Colonel having joined the Continental Army and the resignation and absence
of other officers, he found himself practically in command of two-thirds of the
regiment and without any other Captain in the town to do the duty required,
and asking, accordingly, that his resignation be accepted ; ordered in Council
May 4, 1778, that the resignation be accepted and that an officer be chosen in
his stead ; also. Council order dated May 5, 1779, appointing .said "Ward Com-
missary to the seacoast men stationed at Salem : also, official record of a ballot
