Subject: Caveat emptor
Charles Rice
"Some Webster County, Kentucky families" is a very useful book for western Kentucky genealogists. However, one should be aware that the author included family information from many sources without verifying any of it. The family trees contain numerous mistakes, some of them almost glaring. I estimate that at least 15% of the family information is simply wrong. For example, regarding my own family, the book includes part of a fabricated tree from the 1920s that ties our Rices into a completely unrelated Massachusetts family. In fact, we are of North Carolina - and before that 17th century Virginia - origin. Mysterious "extra" first names or middle names appear for people (especially women) in the family trees, none of which are found in contemporary records such as bibles, census, or marriage documents. By all means use this book as a guide, but you must verify everything you find. It is a gold mine of information for a beginner. However, it also includes some fool's gold. It is mainly a collection of family trees assembled by others and given to the author for inclusion. Therefore, verify, verify ... and then verify it again.
