TELEPHONE TIPS— MONEYSAVING AND MORE

Bad Connection.

If you get a poor connection or are cut off on a Long
Distance call, both parties should hang up. Whoever
placed the call should dial the operator and describe
the bad connection. The operator will reestablish the
call and adjust the charge so you aren't billed for the
interrupted time.

Call during bargain times and save from 35% to
60%.

Rates on interstate One-Plus calls you dial direct are
lower duhng evening, night, and weekend hours. You
can save from 35% to 60% by dialing during these low
rate periods. Refer to the rate charts for out of state
calls on a preceding page in this Call Guide Section.
Coin phone refunds.

If one of our coin phones collects your money and
doesn't complete your call, jot down the number and re-
port it to us. Just dial "O" (operator) from another
phone and we will mail you your refund and repair the
phone that's out of order.
Dial it yourself and save.

You can save money by dialing your calls direct without
involving an operator. We offer lower rates on One-Plus
calls you dial direct to anywhere in the continental
United States. Just dial 1 Plus the Area
Code if different from your own Plus the Distant Num-
ber. If the operator asks for your number, give the one
from which you are calling.
Don't pay for wrong numbers.
If you reach a wrong number when dialing long
distance, we don't want you to pay for the call. Let
the operator know right away so that you won't be
charged for it. If you call from a coin phone, we'll mail
you a refund.
Emergency numbers.

You'll find a place for listing emergency numbers for Po-
lice, Fire, Ambulance, and others on the inside front
cover of this phone book. If you can't find the number
in an emergency, dial "O" (operator) for assistance.
Handicapped?

If you have a problem using the telephone or know of
someone who does, call your local Telephone Business
Office and ask about our special services and equip-
ment for the handicapped. We offer a variety of special
services for those with hearing, sight, speech, or motion
impairments.

if you use the operator, long distance calls cost
more.

Collect, credit card, hotel-guest, and coin phone calls
require the services of an operator. So do requests for
time and charges and calls charged to another number.
These "operator-assisted" calls cost more than One-
Plus calls you dial direct from a regular home or busi-
ness telephone.
Let it ring.

When you make a call, local or long distance, give your
party time to answer— at least 10 rings — before you
hang up. This could save you having to make a second
call later.

Look in the bool(.

To save money on directory assistance charges,
look in the book for numbers you need and call
directory assistance only when you must.

Moving day special.

If you have residence service and are planning a move,
you may save money by having your main phone and all
extensions put in at the same time. This saves our in-
staller an extra trip and saves you a charge for an extra
installer visit.

Person-to-person calls cost the most.

A person-to-person call is the most expensive kind of
long distance call. Call person-to-person only when
you wish to speak to a particular person or extension
phone.

Plan your conversation.

Whether it's business or personal, jot down the things
you want to talk about, the questions you want to ask.
You'll save calling time— and you won't forget some-
thing you wanted to say.

Schedule your calls.

If you call someone frequently, try to arrange a special
time when he or she will be there to take your call
That way you can dial direct the One-Plus way and
save!

Tal(e advantage of holiday rates.

Our 35% discount evening rates apply on interstate
One-Plus calls you dial direct on these legal holidays.
New Year's Day. Independence Day, Labor Day.
Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day— and that's all day.
not just evenings. If you're calling nights or weekends,
you get the 60% discount on interstate One-Plus calls.
Reduced rates also apply on intrastate calls on certain
holidays. Refer to the rate charts on a preceding page
in this Call Guide Section.

Talte your phone booic with you when you move.

It'll save you lots of time when you want to call back to
friends or business associates you left behind— you'll
already have their numbers ahd won't have to waste
valuable time calling for Long Distance Directory
Assistance.

Teach the children to dial "O" in emergencies.

Show your children how to use the phone in an
emergency by teaching them how to dial "O" for the
operator. Also, make sure they know their home
phone number and encourage them to always call
home if they're going to be late. Give them change to
carry for emergency calls.

Use area codes.

Be sure to use the correct area code when dialing out-
side your own area code. You will avoid reaching a
wrong number. Area codes for many cities are listed on
preceding pages in this Call Guide Section.

Vacation rates.

If you are going away for one month or more, you may
save money by temporarily suspending your home or
business telephone service. The suspended service rate

annoyance calls

The Telephone Company is concerned about obscene and
harassing calls and is trying to help stop them. You don't
have to talk or listen to sucn calls -just hang up. If the
calls persist, call your Sen^ice Representative at the
Telephone Company Business Office. If a threat is made at
any time, also call the police.

Malicious, threatening and abusive calls, including those
in which obscene or profane language is used, are pro-
hibited. The making of such calls over the Company's lines
may constitute cause for disconnecting service and possible
criminal prosecution, and civil action by the person called

automatic answering set

Certain telephones are equipped with an automatic device,
known as an automatic answering set. which answers the
telephone mechanically when no person is available. It
then makes a recorded announcement. If your call is
answered by an automatic answering set, listen carefully
for the announcement which will be self explanatory. Some
sets will also record a message from the caller.

customer-provided equipment

Under the Federal Communications Commission's Registration
Program, you may supply your own telephone or other terminal
equipment and connect it directly to the nationwide telephone
network if the equipment and method of connection are in
compliance with the requirements of the Registration Program.
If you choose to provide your own equipment covered by the
Registration Program, however, you are responsible for its
proper connection, maintenance, and repair. FCC rules also
require that you notify the telephone company before connect-
ing your equipment.

The Registration Program does not apply to coin phone service
and party lines.

obtaining telephone service by
fraudulent means

For your protection, new equipment and procedures enable
the Telephone Company to detect and investigate fraudu-
lent calls. State law provides that no person shall defraud
or attempt to defraud the Telephone Company of its lawful
charges. Violators are subject to a maximum penalty of
imprisonment for twelve (12) months; and a fine of One
Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) upon conviction of a first
offense, and for any subsequent offense, confinement
at hard labor in the penitentiary for ten (10) years.

out-of-town directories

Directories for other cities may be obtained by calling
collect to the Business Office, Tuscaloosa, Ala., 345-9011.

tarifFs

"Tariffs filed with and/or approved by the Regulatory
Commissions setting forth the rates, rules and regulations
for telephone sen/ice and facilities are available in our
Business Office for public Inspection."

unlawful wiretapping or eavesdropping

It is a crime under both federal and Alabama law for any
person, including a telephone subscriber, to wiretap or
othenwise intercept a telephone call, unless that person
has first obtained the consent of one of the parties
actually participating in the call. Property authorized law
enforcement officers can engage in interceptions with-
out the consent of either party when proceeding under
court orders issued pursuant to applicable provisions of
federal law. Under federal law, the penalty for illegal

wiretapping can be imprisonment for five (5) years, a
$10,000 fine, or both. Under state law, the penalty can
be a $500 fine.

when you hear a "beep" tone

A short "beep" tone heard on your telephone line about
every 15 seconds means that the person with whom you
are talking is recording your conversation. This signal
is provided by the Telephone Company for your protection.
Use of a recorder without recorder connector equipment
containing a tone-warning device is contrary to the Com-
pany's tariffs and is not permitted, with limited exceptions.
If you do not want a record made of what you are saying,
ask the person with whom you are talking to disconnect
the recording machine. When it is disconnected, you will
no longer hear the "beep" tone. A "beep" tone is not
required when you are talking with a Federal Communica-
tions Commission Licensed Broadcast Station who is
recording a two-way telephone conversation solely for
broadcast over the air with your express or implied consent.

excavating activity

A free locating service is available to mark our underground
facilities. Please don't interrupt vital services! Call 48 hrs. before
digging 1 4 800-292-8525

your telephone number is important

When your telephone number is preceded by your area code
it is the only one like it in the United States or Canada.
When leaving your telephone number for someone else to
call you, be sure to include the Area Code, if the caller
will be calling from a different telephone area than your
own (see page 5) Numbers are most easily understood if
they are given to others as "area code 3-1-1 (pause)
5-5-5 (pause) 3-6-3-1." When writing your telephone
numbers, separate it like this: area code (311) 555-3631.

If you're in business, it's smart to make it easy for your
customers to reach you. Show your telephone number on
your stationery, statements and all advertising pieces?
Show your area code too- it helps distant parties call you
faster.
