These drawings show you how to
install or disconnect plug-in
telephones.

Drawings one through four show
standard wall sockets, or jacks, for
nnodular telephone cords. To install
your phone, match the plug at the
end of the cord with the jack, and
insert. To disconnect your phone,
squeeze the clip on the plug and
pull it out of the jack.

Drawings five and six show different
kinds of jacks. You can use these
with modular phones by putting an
adapter in between. Plug the
adapter into the jack, then plug the
cord into the adapter.

A jack for a wall-mounted telephone
is shown below. To connect your
wall phone, match the holes in the
back of the phone with the rivets on
the wall mounting. Push the phone
lightly against the mounting and
slide it down into place. To discon-
nect, slide the phone up to lift it off
the rivets, then pull it away from the
wall.

How to call
Directory Assistance

For local numbers, dial;

1 + 411

For in-state numbers outside your
local calling area but with the same
area code as yours, dial:

1+555-1212

For numbers with a different area
code from yours, dial:

1+area code
+555-1212

For telephone numbers of
businesses and people who have
"800" numbers, dial: ,

1+800
♦555-1212

Charges for Directory
Assistance

Most Alabama customers have a
basic five-call allowance each
month which applies to calls to
local Directory Assistance (1+411)
and for numbers within the 205
area (1+555-1212). Directory
Assistance calls over the allowance
cost 20 cents each. Directory
Assistance calls placed through the
Operator ("0") carry an additional
20-cent charge. Charges do apply
to requests for numbers which are
not listed, non-published or which
the Operator cannot find.

Directory Assistance charges do not
apply to calls from hotels, motels,
hospitals, or Public telephones.

You can make one in-state Directory
Assistance call without charge for
each m-state long distance call
completed from and billed to your
line within the monthly billing
period. There is no charge for
Directory Assistance calls outside
Alabama.

Customers who have a disability
which prevents use of a directory
may apply for exemption from
these charges through their
Service Representative.

01382 c. South Central Bell Telephone Company 1982

Five ways to save on
Directory Assistance
charges

1. Write down the numbers that you
call frequently. You may wish to
circle or underline a number in your
directory to quickly find the number
a second time.

2. To get the telephone number of
someone who has recently moved,
call the old number. A new number
reference is generally provided.

3. If you need three numbers,
request them at the same time.
Once a call to Directory Assistance
has been placed, two additional
listings can be given at no extra
charge.

4. You can save the cost of a
second call to Directory Assistance
if you can supply complete
information the first time: exact
location, accurate spelling and full
names.

5. If you are not sure of the name
or spelling of a restaurant, store,
union or business, check the Yellow
Pages under the appropriate
heading.

How to obtain directories

Additional directories or directories
for other areas may be obtained by
calling your Service Representative.

Errors in directory listings

If your listing is incorrect or omitted
from this directory, please contact
your Service Representative. We
will correct our records to assure
that such an error or omission
does not recur. "^

Dialing direct costs less

By dialing your own long distance
calls, you will pay the lowest rate
and pay for only the minutes you
talk (one-minute minimum).

To place a direct-dialed call:

within the 205 area, dial

1 + the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial

1 + the area code
+ the telephone
number

If you have trouble dialing direct,
call the Operator and explain the
difficulty. The call will be placed for
you. and you will be charged at the
direct-dial rate.

» A.,

Calling Card calls

If you have a Calling Card (credit
card), you can place long distance
calls economically and have them
charged to your regular monthly bill
To obtain a Calling Card, call your
Service Representative. There are
two ways to place Calling Card
calls.

1. To place a Calling Card call
from any telephone:

within the 205 area, dial

+ the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial

O + the area code
+ the telephone
number

When the Operator comes on the
line say you're placing a Calling
Card call and give your card
number.

Calling Card Touch-Tone*
telephone customers

A new service (not yet available
in all areas) will allow you to
place a Calling Card call without
Operator assistance.

After you dial "0" + the number you
are calling, you will hear a special
tone. You can then dial your full
14-digit Calling Card number and
the equipment will record it. If you
happen to misdial your Calling Card
number, you'll get a recorded
announcement telling you the
correct procedure.

If dialing from a Public telephone,
the special tone will be followed by
a recorded announcement asking
you to dial your Calling Card
number

2. To place a Calling Card call
from Touch-Tone* telephones
only:

within the 205 area, dial

O + the telephone
number

(wait for tone)

+ the Calling Card
number

outside the 205 area, dial

O + the area code
+ the telephone
number

(wait for tone)

+ the Calling Card
number

Exception: you can save time if the
number you're calling is the same
number as is on your Calling Card
Dial "0" + the area code (if
needed) + the telephone number +
the last 4 digits of the card
number and your call will go
through.

Irademark of AT&T GO

Sequence calling

Where the new service is available,
sequence calling is an added
convenience you can use to place
more than one Calling Card call
without entering the full card
number each time.

To place a sequence call from a
Touch-Tone phone:

Don't hang up.

Dial

+ the new number

Billing on the first call stops when
you begin your sequence call. You
don't have to redial your Calling
Card number to have the new call
automatically charged to the billing
number.

Operator-assisted calls

Long distance calls requiring an
Operator are more expensive. Calls
placed from hotels and Public
telephones, as well as the following
types of calls, are all Operator-
assisted calls.

To place an Operator-assisted
call:

within the 205 area, dial

+ the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial

+ the area code
* the telephone
number

Collect calls

You may call collect if the person or
firm you are calling agrees to pay
the charges. Dial the call and when
the Operator comes on the line, say
you're placing a collect call and
give your name.

Third-number calls

You may have long distance
charges billed to an authorized third
telephone number. Dial the call and
when the Operator comes on the
line, say you'd like to charge your
call to a third number and give the
Operator that number including the
area code.

Time and charges

When placing a long distance call,
you may ask the Operator to tell you
the length of time you talked and
how much It cost. Dial the call and
when the Operator comes on the
line, say that you will want time and
charges when the call is completed.

Person-to-person calls

Call person-to-person when you
wish to reach a particular person or
extension number. Dial the call and
when the Operator comes on the
line, say you are making a person-
to-person call and give the name of
the person you want to talk to. The
Operator will leave the line when
the person you're calling has
answered the telephone.

"800" Service telephone
numbers

Long distance calls can be made
without charge when calling those
businesses and people who have
"800" numbers.

To call an "800" number, dial:

1 + 800 + the
telephone number

other types of telephone
calls

Mobile and marine calls

You can make local and long
distance calls to automobiles,
trucks, aircraft, boats and ships
that have phones. Calls can be
completed by dialing direct or
calling the Operator.

Conference calls

You can talk with several people in
different places at the same time by
dialing the Operator and saying you
wish to make a conference call.
Give the Operator the names and

you want to talk to. You may want
to arrange a calling time in advance.

These include person-to-person, collect. Calling Card,
