NOTES.
The Wife of Jno. Tili.ey. — Mr. Henry R. Howland, of Buffalo, a descendant
of John Tilley, has kindly communicated the following in regard to that family among
the Mayflower passengers, which, in the Society Year Book, was given as follows :
" I. John Tilley, died the first winter before April 21, 1621.
"2. Bridget Van de Velde. his wife, probably of Amsterdam, Holland, died
before April 21st.
"3. Elizabeth, their daughter, born 1607; married John Howland, 1621 ; died
December 21, 1687, at. So."
He says : Governor Bradford does not mention the name of John Tilley's wife,
but in his list of the Mayflower passengers mentions :
"John Tillie and his wife ; and Elizabeth, their daughter." And again, thirty
years later, he writes :
"John Tillie and his wife both dyed a little after they came ashore ; and their
daughter Elizabeth married with John Howland, and hath issue, as is before noted."
The good old governor in each case speaks of the young girl as " their daughter,"
implying that her own mother was with her, whereas in a different case, such as that
of Stephen Hopkins and his wife, he is scrupulous to mention two of the children as
being " by a former wife."
I suppose your mention of Bridget Van de Velde as the wife of John Tilley is
based upon Dr. Henry M. Dexter's note to his edition of Mourt's " Relation " in
which he quotes an old record found by him in Holland :
" J 3
— February, 161 5, John Telley, silk worker of Leyden, married Bridget Van
der Velde," from which Mr. Goodwin in his "Pilgrim Republic," p. 186, naming
