REPLY.

Vail or Veale (vol. xxvii. 3, p. 165). Since my communication in vol.
xxvii. 2, p. 113, I have obtained the following additional and earlier information
of the Vail family of Westchester County, from the Town Records of West Chester.

Book 1, p. 29, 1666, May 7, the Town of West Chester granted land to Thomas
Vaill, and again, Book 1, p. 33, 1666, July 7, to Thomas Vaille. Book 1, p. 45,
167S, June 22, John Pell sold 14 acres to Samuel Vaile. Book 1, p. 119, 1682,
June 3, Samuel Vaile of West Chester gave a mortgage to Thomas Hunt, Jr., for S
pounds, 17s. 3d. This would indicate that the American family of Vail may not have
been the same as the English family of Veale. My reasons for supposing they were
the same were the following :

The earliest deeds of land which I have found recorded where Vails were
grantors were signed Veale. The early Friends' Records spelled the name in the
same way. My uncle, now living, remembers my grandfather (William Haviland of
Purchase, X. Y., b. 1771, d. 1S42) speaking frequently of our being related to the
" Vee-Lee" family. He also heard him speak of the Vail family. I have found that
Thomas Vail, Jr.. of West Chester (b. 2d of 1st mo., 1739), by his marriage (12th of
bth mo., 1767) to Sarah Carpenter (sister of my great-grandmother, Phebe Carpen-
ter, wife of John Haviland), became the uncle, by marriage, of my grandfather
The parents of this Thomas Vail, Jr., were Thomas Vail of West Chester, b. 3d of
9th mo., 1714, and Mary Griffen, b. 27th of 8th mo., 1720. His grandparents were
Samuel Vail of West Chester, b. 167S, d. 26th of 4th mo., 1733, and Abigail Vail, b.
1685, d. 14th of 8th mo., 1724.

This Samuel Vail is mentioned in Friends' Records as Sam. Veal or Veale:
" 1709, 6th of 8th mo. a deed of uses to be drawn for the settlement of the house and
land at West Chester in name of Sam'l Veale, Wm. Burling, Mat Farrington and
Jos. Rodman" (Friends' Records).

In England the families of Veale and Haviland were connected by marriage; see
History of the Havilands in England in the library of the Society, p. iS: "John
Haviland, Esq., of Gundenham Manor (near Taunton, Somersetshire), b. 25th Sept.,
1719. married 4th of June, 1753, to Anne, only child of Francis Veale. Esq ; " also p.
86, Will of Lucretia, widow of John Haviland, Esq., of Plymouth (Devonshire), dated
April 16, 1746 : " I give and bequeath to Mr. Thomas Veale and his wife a mourning
ring each, of five and twenty shillings apiece." Tho. Veale also signs as witness to
this Will. My grandfather may have alluded to this English family of Veale.

FREDERICK HAVILAND, New Rochelle. N. Y.
