MODERN LANGUAGES
Since the U. S. l)ecame a world power, the necessity^! bur ceas-

need for our pupils, we offer the spoken German, French and
Spanish, taught by a Master of Arts of Harvard, with more than
five 3'ears of special study of modern languages abroad.

ASHE VILLE
T"RO "BOJVO TX/'BLICO
In submitting Volume Xll of the Asheville City Directory, it is
gratifying to note the progress that is being made in industries and
growth of popuhition.
A great factor in the upbuilding of any city is its civic pride; the
fact that your citizens stand as a unit on everything that affects the
prosperity of your city is worthy of commendation.
The City Directory is one of the foremost enterprises of any city;
it is generally referred to by the press of the whole country as a semi-
public institution of great value.
The Directory is more than a mere list of names of residents, giving
their various occupations and addresses, it is an infallible guide to your
city, for your people and for the stranger within your gates. It not only
deals with your people, but with your government, your institutions and
various other organizations. It is a recognized standard work of refer-
ence and becomes the most reliable history of your city and its citizens.
As there is no other publication in the world which gives the informa-
tion as contained in the City Directory, there is probably no other publi-
cation in which all the people are so vitally interested.
To gather the data and compile a volume of this'character is no easy
task. It requires much time, a well defined system, the patience of Job
and incurs no little expense. Few people have any idea of the work it
means and the tenacity it takes to publish a reliable directory.
In preparing this book the publishers have spared neither time nor
expense, and if errors occur or a single name is omitted which should
appear in the work, it is generally the fault of the public and not of the
publisher, as every house is visited and it is 'not the publisher's -or 'can-
vasser's fault if -some one fails- to give all the information or gives
it incorrectly. The intentions of the reliable publisher are always
for improvement, and you can always count on getting as accurate
a directory as circumstances will permit.
The estimate of the population of a city is a matter necessarily en-
joined upon the directory publisher; such estimates, however, are not
merely theoretical, but based on facts, sustained by the contents of the
publication.
This volume contains 13,150 names of individuals; using the con-
servative multiple 21/2 times, to represent the names of married wo-
men and children not counted, indicates a population of
32,875
(This does not mean simply population inside the city limits, but
takes in consideration all suburbs included in the Directory.)
In concluding, we desire to thank our patrons for their support and
to extend our thanks to the public in general for the courteous way in
which nearly everyone supplied our canvassers with the desired data.
We shall continue this pulilication from time to time to meet the de-
mand. Yours truly,
PIEDMOXT DIRECTORY CO., ERNEST H. MILLER, Pres.
