LIFE OF PHILLIP WILLIAM WINDLE
(Paternal Grandfather)

Phillip William Windle was born September 1,
1878, in Mt. Morris, Illinois to George and Mary
Windle. He was the only son and had tfcret ;
Minnie, Addie, and Orpha.

His father was engaged in farming on their large
farm which was 240 acres. All the children had to
help with the farm work in addition to hired hands
at harvest time.

The farm was located one mile north of Mr. Morris,
In Mt. Morris were churches, grocery and hardware

a.

stores, lumber yard, a publishing business, a bank,
and a church college. Phillip and his sisters walk-
ed into town to attend school and they all later
attended Mt. Morris College. Picnics, ball games,
band concerts, and holiday celebrations were major
events in town and Phillip's family traveled in for
these.

Church attendance was important to the family.
Every Sunday they would attend the Church of the
Brethren in Mt. Morris. The balance of the day was
spent either visiting neighbors or relatives, and

playing games at home.

The family was considered well-off. The fax.
they lived on was large and provided for a fev; luxu-
ries. A colored maid lived with the family. She
was a member of the only black family living in the
area.

Phillip lived and worked on this farm he was
born on until 1936.

LIFE OF ANNA REBECCA PAUL
(Paternal Grandmother)

Anna Rebecca Paul was born on January 10,
1884, in Leaf River, Illinois to Fred & Minnie
Paul. She had one sister, Emily Paul. Her fami-
ly lived on a farm in Leaf River, Illinois.

She and her sister attended school in Leaf
River; Anna attending up to 10th grade.

When Anna was young, she enjoyed baking and
sewing. As her relatives remember her, she was a
devoted Christian. Every Sunday, she played the
pump organ at Silver Creek church, a little church
in the country. This is how she met Phillip Windle
who she married in 1905 in Leaf River, Illinois.

THEIR LIFE TOGETHER - PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS

Anna Rebecca Paul

and

Phillip William Windle

Anna and Phillip were married in 1905 in
Leaf River, Illinois. They honeymooned in Chicago.
Transportation to Chicago was by train which was
an exciting event in itself.

After they returned, they moved into the farm
Phillip had bought from his father, George, who had
ttaftired and moved into Mt. Morris. It was a large
fonahouse and allowed plenty of room for their fami-
ly which grew to seven children.

Anna spent her time doing household chores, while
Phillip and all the children worked the farm. Anna
enjoyed growing things in a small garden. She also
would bake cakes and breads to take to the Winnebago
and Boone County fairs and came up with many blue and
champion ribbons. Phillip raised prize-winning chic-
kens and Ouroc hogs which he exhibited and won cham-
pion ribbons for. He also had race horses. He
greatly enjoyed these exhibits. Among his accomplish-
ments in this area is a catalog he wrote on his prize-
winning chickens.

During these years, the family moved approxi-
mately every two years. Their life, however, did seem
to center around Mt. Morris even though they lived in
Pecatonica and Winnebago.

Anna was a charter member of the Helping Hand
Club in Mt. Morris and both were members of the "42"
Club. This group gathered and played the game of "42",
a domino game. Anna enjoyed sewing, canning, baking
bread, and churning the butter. She sold some of this
bread and butter for extra money.

Their life together was uneventful until 1936
when Anna became ill. She died on January 25,1937,
of cancer. Fortunately, all of her children were
grown and able to care for themselves.

Phillip remarried and lived with his second wife,
Nora Gouker Buser, on a farm west of Rockford until
1961. At this time, they retired and moved into Rock-
ford. Here they lived until his death in 1963. Nora
later moved to Americana Nursing Hose where she remained
until her death in 1966.

LIFE OF ARLAND EUGENE WINDLE
(My Father)

Axland Eugene Windle was born June 18, 1915, in
Mt. Morris, Illinois to Phillip and Anna Windle. He
had six brothers and sisters; Velda, George, Cleo,
Leland, Genevieve, and Ruth.

The farm they lived on was large and so was their
farmhouse. The boys doubled up for sleeping but eabh
girl had her own room.

The lives of each family member centered around
the farmwork and the completion of it. There wasn't
much time for fun. The daily routine involved getting
up at 6 o'clock, feeding the horses and chickens, and
cleaning all the barns. This was done before break-
fast. Then the children were off to school at 9:00.
After school, the same chores had to be done again.

Arland's family moved often. Each move meant
herding all the animals from one farm to another.
After the Mt. Morris farm, my father moved to Pece-
tonica, then to Winnebago, and later to just south of
Rockford. My father remembers the reason they moved
so often was that his father, Phillip, was never satis-
fied with any of the farms he rented.

Farm work was difficult and Phillip Windle work-
ed his children hard. Chores were all important. If
they weren't done, then school didn't matter. Holi-
days and birthdays were just ordinary days except for
Christmas. This day was celebrated with a trip to
Ar land's Aunt Addie's in Mt. Morris. This ended,
though, when the family moved from Mt. Morris. They
always had a Christmas tree and there were a few
presents but the holiday was not over-celebrated.

Arland's parents were both rather religious.
They were both members of the First Church of the
Brethren. Most Sundays the family attended church
and the children were brought up to believe in God.

My father attended many schools due to the many
moves his family made. Among these were Mt. Morris
School, Stonebreaker School, (a country school) Avey
School, Blake School, West Heights School, Roosevelt
Junior High School, and Rockford Central High School.
At this point, Arland quit school for two years. He
lacked interest; didn't feel he had nice enough clothes;
and thought he could do better working on the fara.
After a while, he went back to Harlem High School and
then went on to graduate from Hononegah High School.
