The Rev. James S. Garner, Jr. '13 has

been living at 518 Ebb Place in Charlotte
since retiring from the active ministry in
1961. He was pastor of Charlotte's Forest
Hill Presbyterian Church for eight years
(1953-61) prior to retirement after holding
pastorates in Orlando and Plant City, Fla..
in Bennettsville, S. C. (for 17 years, 1927-44),
Mebane, N. C, and Mullins. S. C. He holds
BD degrees from both Columbia and Prince-
ton seminaries, an MA from the University

ment near Blackstock, S. C. (Route 1), where
he was in the lumber business for 20 years
and associated with the McKeown Feed &
Supply Company of Chester. He also has
been active as a Presbyterian elder. He was
a member of Coach Walter Johnson's first
football team (1915) and made All State
guard in 1918.

Dr. Louis C. LaMotte '22 and his wife,
the former Sarah Hunter '20, continue to live
in Maxton, N. C, where he served for 21
years (1938-61) as president of Presbyterian
Junior College and then for six years as vice-
president of St. Andrews College. Grateful
PJC alumni gave them the Maxton home.
He earned his MA degree from the Univer-
sity of South Carolina, ThM from Princeton

Mrs. Philson, Oldest Alumna, Celebrates 95th Birthday

Mrs. Addie Horton Philson '00, who shares with Dr. T. Ellison Simpson '00 of
Darlington, S. C, the distinction of being PC's oldest living former students, celebrated
her 95th birthday this month. She has been a resident of the Bethea Home near
Darlington for the past two years after an active life far past the age of retirement.

A devoted Baptist, she taught Sunday School for more than 55 years and early
in her life was a school teacher in private and public schools. Then, after the death of
her husband, she became in 1949 at age 66 assistant to the dean of women at Coker
College. She remained in that position until she was 75. From this point until she entered
the Bethea Home, she lived alternately with her two daughters.

Seminary and ThD from Union Seminary
of Virginia.

Ratchford VV. Boland '24 of Clinton has
maintained his active interest in civic and
religious affairs since retiring after 33 years
(1935-68) as an agent with Liberty Life
Insurance Company. He is especially de-
voted to his Lutheran Church, where he has
served as officer and teacher, and to the Ki-
wanis Club, where his leadership has ranged
from local officer to division lieutenant-
governor.

John VV. Copeland '27 was married on
December 12, 1976, to Margaret Smith
Clark, and they now make their home at 132
Pressley Street. Apartment A, Greenwood,
S. C. After serving in World War II and
retiring as an Army colonel, he was a
senior accountant with S. D. Leidesdorf
& Co. and then secretary-treasurer with
Potter-Shackelford Construction Company in
Greenville. He has been a trustee and board
chairman of his Methodist Church and
received the Diamond Merit Award of the
National Office Management Association.

Dr. Herbert Blake '28. retired obstetrician-
gynecologist of Anderson, S. C, last fall
donated to Emory University School of
Medicine a collection of obstetrical forceps
described as "the greatest collection in the
Western Hemisphere" and valued at a mini-
mum of $20,000. The oldest of the 57
forceps dates from the mid-1 8th century and

many are of European origin. They have
been placed on permanent display.

Adger M. Carter '29 continues to reside
at 3184 Wheeler Road, Augusta. Ga., after
retiring from two separate careers. He ended
his Army career in 1960 with the rank of
colonel and then settled in Augusta for an
1 1-year tenure as principal of the Merry
Elementary School, until his retirement from
that position in 1970. During this time, he
also has been an active Presbyterian elder.
Carter served as a principal in two North
Carolina public schools prior to entering the
